Sadly we lost another iconic soul legend that i`ve followed for years, so here`s my tribute to a very talented man who made a lot of people happy with his early records and his band Maze much later on. Like the rest of our musical idols who have passed, you may be gone from this earth but NEVER forgotten. There,s a full in depth article about his life at this PLACE well worth the read. This is PART ONE of this tribute i,ll deal with PART TWO his sixties output tomorrow that enshrined him in Northern Soul History as a LEGEND.
The Houston Texas label Crazy Cajun has thrown up countless obscure groups out of the mainstream music circle. There were several groups bearing the name the Ascots in the 1960,s some soul, some garage. The Washington group on Mir-A-Don well known over here for their dancers on the scene and cool records. These Ascots (who started off as the Escotts) were local guys from Beaumont an hours drive to the west of Houston who only recorded this one album & a handful of 45,s. Their lead singer is a name familiar to most UK/northern fans/collectors for his tasty dancers and general talent, Talmadge Armstrong, other members were James Duhon & A C Gillory. No idea what happened to these guys, just vanished from the business ?... i came across this gem yesterday whilst diggin to jog my now crappy memory. I can look at an album and the memories come flooding back..weird ?...I sold the LP to a guy again in the states and was honest about a scratch on one of the tracks..being a true collector he said it was ok and he still wanted to buy it so we did a deal for a good price all round. Ive edited that track (3) so about 15 seconds is missing from the end. Some great dancers on here & i remembering dancing to them...where do the years go eh ? and a cracking album in general. I,m so pleased that i did scans of everything i parted with and made copies never thinking one day they would come in handy or that i would ever have a blog. The label is very popular with most of you guys so lets take a listen to these gems!
We,ve reviewed a few of his albums so let,s look at his 45 output from so many various labels. The man was so talented i dont know anybody who isnt a fan of his collective releases. Whether your into Northern, Blues, Soul sweet & deep that man did it all!...LEGEND!
Some of these you may know, some rarities also, all from the TK stable of Henry Stone. Volume 1 was reviewed back in january last year. Some great tracks & this is available on CD & Vinyl but a bit pricy so i opted for the digital copy, bit surprised as it says they are flac but i dont think so, still its what,s in the grooves that count, a tenner well spent nevertheless.
Only the one review today as ive been diggin the crates...This is One Of The Best Soul Albums Ever Recorded....IMHO...faultless! Miami’s First Lady of Soul, Way before betty Wright, issued 45s on the Blue Star, Lloyd, Deep City, Phil L.A. Of Soul, Dash, and Dade labels. She was not only the first artist to record for Clarke-Pearsall Productions, Miami’s first independent black production company before henry Stone, she was also the only artist on Miami’s Deep City label to record a full-length LP, & here it is! I reviewed her LP album on numero a while back that contained five tracks from this but thats all, they should have done the whole original LP. Helene was married to Johnny Pearsall, when she was 23, shortly after most of her Phil-LA of Soul recordings were released. They continued to live in Miami and had one daughter who became a lawyer.Johnny Pearsall also owned a record store in Miami and continued to work with music until his untimely death. Helene carried on his mission working with deprived children and herself became a teacher in a Miami school not recording again, which was a waste with her gifted voice. Apologies for my battered covers & thats how the album was when i sold it.

"Just Ain't Good Enough" is an album Johnnie released on the short lived Beverly Glen label in 1982 owned by soul legend Otis Smith. The record spawned three hits for Johnnie, "What About My Love" (one of my fave tracks of all time, simply stunning!) "Just Ain't Good Enough" and "I'm So Proud". It's a solid effort that fits the sound and style alongside his six albums for Columbia. Johnnie, dissatisfied with the label's promotion of the record, would soon leave for Malaco, but this is the missing link in the chain, and a superb slab of soul well worth hearing from this soul genius. This is my CD copy as my LP is well worn. A soul lovers Delight!
This is one of the rarest albums out there,i sold my copy for £900 years ago & just checked it,s now going for $1000!!! These guys worked at Henry stones TK studio,s untill they made this rare album on a joint venture with jim qualley who also produced the album. Alex jones (Vocals & Guitar), Leroy Jones (Vocals) & P.C.(Drums) comprised the group who hailed from Florida. thanks again goes to yves for requesting this and making me hunt for my back up CD. they recorded a handful of 45,s for Sure Shot, bell-O-Soul,& Double Shot worth hunting out if i can find my 45,s ?..no tasters on youtube as so rare, so here,s mine..
My first vacation abroad for 7 years (Covid BS) & i cant wait!...If Moxy gets back from the USA where he,s on a record hunt ( been there, done that!) he might do some reviews, otherwise i,ll be back on the 21st guys. So all stay safe and see you then!
