FURTHER UPDATE******Henry Moore - It's My Own Tears That's Being Wasted (1978) Crazy Cajun LP Only + Bonus Tracks - Rare Soul (MP3 85MB)

I,ve spent most of the day putting this album + Bonus tracks together so the only post guys for today...This was the only album released from Texan Henry Moore and you would have more luck finding a piece of Gold than locating this gem! He also only recorded a hand full of 45,s, & although this album was released in 1978 most tracks were 1960,s tunes from unreleased demo,s only one of his 45,s are included each side. He came to my notice again via the UK Northern scene & then hunting out his elusive material. What can i add except to say this is a great album & i,ve included everything i can find on the man as Bonus tracks. A great team effort!..And just updated as two more tracks found thanks to USMAN47 & three more from OSR!Thats everything the man has done apart fron a B side on Jet Stream.

Birdlegs - LP (1964) Cuca Records - Birdlegs & Pauline - Expanded Edition Digital (2022) Numero - Rare R&B/Soul (FLAC 470MB)

A superb album released via digital platform as well as vinyl but no CD, with my old LP scratched beyond beliefe it,s a very welcome addition. As i previously stated many record companys seem to be going down this route and distancing themselves from the CD format with selective companys still issuing vinyl as well as CD,s, but this seems to be the future in music as streaming is also the number one format and here to stay. I have no problem with this, and digital drops are a lot cheaper, except not many are providing back covers which is ridiculous as we (older collectors0 do like a back cover to browse for tracks info etc.....So more work for me unfortunatley..............Tucked deep into the wilds of Wisconsin, Cuca Records was the custom recording and pressing outfit for the Badger state. From its opening in 1959 until its closing in 1973, Jim Kirchstein recorded nearly 2,000 sides, ranging from polka and gospel to country and R&B and issued over 1,000 45s on his Cuca, Sara, Age of Aquarius, Night Owl, Citation, Psalms, Top Gun, and Jolly Dutchman labels. Though the studio was located in rural Sauk City, Cuca quickly became a go-to destination for black artists looking to cut on the cheap. “Black musicians, especially the young R&B bands, loved to come to this little town, since there were treated as royalty,” Kirchstein said in an interview. “Often I would hear, ‘Hey, there ain’t no black people here!’ My folks’ grocery store next door was always opened for bread and bologna before the late seasons started, with a quick trip downtown for wine. One could buy carry-out liquor up to midnight in those days. It really was a lot of fun then, not work, even, though the sessions were long.”.....Sidney “Birdlegs” Banks and his wife Pauline made the trek from nearby Rockford, Illinois, in early 1963. Backed by brothers Mack and Floyd Murphy as The Versatility Birds, the couple cut the bluesy shuffler “Spring” b/w “So Many Ways” issued on Cuca that February and eventually climbing to #18 on the R&B chart and later reissued by a near bankruptcy Vee Jay. “Pauline was one of the finest vocalists I’ve ever heard,” Kirchstein said. “Could have been a lot of money if [Vee Jay] had stayed in business. We did an album on them shortly after.” That album came and went with the season, and by the end of the decade the Banks,s had split up. Former Mrs. Banks Pauline Shivers cut a handful of records under her maiden name for Chicago’s Expo and Opex concerns. Birdlegs never recorded again, a rare one and done hit artist. From the initial album session came all these other tracks never issued till 2018. The Expanded tracks are listed below the album back cover. Eveything they recorded is here & rare NORTHERN.

Various Artists - Color Me Soul - The Crazy Cajun Recordings - Volume 1 (2023) Digital (HQ MP3 129MB)

Back in 1963, a string of hit records broke out of Houston and put Music Enterprises Inc., Crazy Cajun Records, Tribe Records, and Crazy Cajun Music publishing companies on the map, along with independent producer and promoter Huey P. Meaux. Sixty years later, the songs Meaux helped bring to ears around the world remain as fresh and exciting as when they were recorded, ripe for the picking when soulful music is called for. What Huey P. Meaux lacked in technical skills was made up by his ability to unearth talented music people of colour, hear a voice that could sing in what he called “The Heartbreak Key,” and recognize songwriters who knew how to tell a story. His father Pappy (Te-Tan) Meaux played Cajun accordion and sang in French. As a barber in Winnie, Texas in the southeast corner of the state, Meaux developed an ear for what was popular. He learned the record business as a Port Arthur radio disc jockey, and hosted a teen music show on Port Arthur television.  This digital compilation is celebrating 60 Years of Great Songs in 2023. Hopefully more volumes to come!

Kent 418 - Millie Jackson - On The Soul Country Side (2014 + Booklet) - Rare Soul/Country (FLAC 546MB)

REPOST/UPGRADE from the old blog....Although Millie Jackson’s sassy big city image suggests otherwise, she’s a country gal. Born in rural Georgia, Millie grew up listening to country music as there were no R&B stations in the area. It was only when she moved to New Jersey as a teenager that she had the chance to regularly hear anything else 7 move back to her ethnic roots. Almost every album Millie made between 1975 and 1981 contained at least one country song.  In 1977 she reached #5 on the Soul chart with ‘If You’re Not Back in Love By Monday’, a big hit for its writer Merle Haggard earlier that year. Millie also turned Kenny Rogers’ groundbreaking ‘Sweet Music Man’ into a Top 40 Soul hit in 1978. In 1980 Millie cut an album that lived up to its title of "Just A Li’l Bit Country" but the record did not receive the promotion it deserved due to personnel changes at her record company. Millie regards it as something of a "lost album" and is pleased Kent were able to include several of its tracks in this collection of her Soul Country material. The sweep ranges from 1950s classics and her duet with Isaac Hayes on Anne Murray’s "You Needed Me". Millie always picked her own material, usually in conjunction with producer Brad Shapiro. She chose all the songs here because she liked them and frequently liked the singers who sang them originally. "Black Bitch Crazy", Millie’s makeover of a then recent Country chart-topper "Redneck Crazy" created especially for this CD and her first new recording in 10 years (as from 2014) shows she can still interpret a country song in a compelling and contemporary way. Millie cut it this year after hearing Farr’s record on the radio and identifying with its message. It’s as good as anything she recorded at the peak of her chart popularity and is a more than welcome addition to her discography. They say "you can take the girl out of the country, but you can’t take the country out of the girl". The selection of songs and performances here show just how true that is in Millie Jackson’s case, after all she is a legend and if she likes it so must we, dont we ? Only Millie Jackson can turn country records into Soul & make it acceptable to this man,s ears!

Marva Hicks - Marva Hicks (1991 + Mini Booklet) Polydor + Bonus Track - Rare Soul (FLAC 378MB)

Marva Denise Hicks was born in 1956 in Petersburg, Virginia, & Passed in 2022 in New York. Marva`s early career was as a gospel singer in her home town Petersburg where she honed her craft. After taking a trip to New York, she was attracted to theatre and later took acting classes in Washington, D.C. From there she joined the group, the Eighties Ladies in 1981 for one album on Roy Ayers Uno Melodic label. She recorded several demos, after the band split, and recorded 'Looking Over My Shoulder' for Infinity Records in 1981. When the label folded she wound up singing in Lena Horne's Broadway show for nearly three years. During a London tour Hicks met Stevie Wonder who was blown away by her performance & voice. She began touring with him in the mid-'80's, and undertook background vocals on his LP 'Characters'. She signed with Polydor in the late '80's and released this her only album & 5 x 45,s. To say the album is polished & classy is an under statement, listen to the tasters. She sadly passed in 2022 at the age of 66 causes unknown. I,ve included a bonus track that was big in the soul clubs here in the UK in the 1970,s. She concentrated more on her award winning acting career which was a shame.

100 Proof Aged In Soul - Somebody`s been Sleeping In My Bed + 100 proof Aged In Soul (Inc Bonus Tracks) (2009 + Booklet) Edsel - 2 x CD - Rare Soul (FLAC 737MB)

The group were formed in 1969 in Detroit by the famed songwriting team Holland-Dozier-Holland (after they left Motown). HDH formed the Invictus and Hot Wax catalogues and signed up 100 proof straight away. Those labels featured albums by Chairmen Of The Board, Freda Payne, Parliament, Lamont Dozier, Laura Lee, the Honey Cone, Ruth Copeland and many more. 100 proof are associated with The 8th Day with Clyde Wilson in particular in both groups. Given that it boasted two of the most distinctive voices of 1960s soul, 100 Proof could be seen as soul's equivalent to the 'supergroups' that also abounded in rock music towards the end of that decade. Lead vocalists Joe Stubbs (older brother of Four Tops' legendary front man Levi) and Clyde Wilson (as "Steve Mancha") had already endeared themselves to all fans of Detroit Soul long before the assembly of 100 Proof. Joe Stubbs singing for the Falcons, the Contours and the Originals, Ed Wilson as a solo artist, & Clyde Wilson under the name of "Steve Mancha" their pedigree speaks for itself. This release contains everything released under the name 100 Proof Aged In Soul, including the massive hits "Too Many Cooks", "Somebody's Been Sleeping" (which sold over one million copies and went gold) and "Everything Good Is Bad". The booklet is fully annotated by HDH authority Tony Rounce & essential reading guys. Only two albums & 19 x 45,s released. They broke up in 1973, although the name was re-used for a totally different line-up of musicians for a short period in 1977. This is essential detroit listening! hard core soul fans will know this group but if you dont check out all the tasters, your in for a treat, the last one is killer funk at its best!

Jewel and Paula were started by Stan Lewis, a record store owner and mail-order operator specializing in the kind of vital R&B,Blues,Soul and Gospel tunes that many people enjoyed, but were highly undervalued by most major record labels. Lewis moved into the record business during the mid 1960s, signing raw artists who made music light years away from slick pop fare. This two disc anthology features prime Jewel and Paula acts from the 1960s,'70s and '80s.The first disc includes urgent soul tunes from Toussaint McCall and Ted Taylor,Delta blues from Frank Foster, classic shouting R&B from Joe Turner, the smoother R&B sound of Charles Brown,Lightnin' Hopkins,John Lee Hooker, and others. The second disc is just as Distinguished, featuring Little Johnny Taylor, Fontella Bass,Ike and Tina Turner,Buster Benton and Ted Taylor then budding stars Bobby Rush and Artie "Blues Boy" White, plus other regional attractions. Rasputin's Stash - Rasputin's Stash (LP 1971 Cotillion - CD 2013 Cotillion Japan) - Rare Soul/Funk (FLAC 242MB)

Chicago soul brothers Rasputin's Stash didn't hit the big time, but their quality funk deserves to be resurrected and enjoyed by future generations. What the band lacks in imaginative vocal styling, they more than make up for with instrumental prowess. Rasputin's Stash plays with a perfect combination of street smart grit, professional level chops, and drug savvy freakiness, rocking a funk that has proven popular with latter day beat samplers. "Your Love Is Certified" leads off the debut, and it's the strongest cut, undeniable dancefloor bait with countrified slide guitar and a bracing horn arrangement. Keyboardist Vincent Willis wrote the tune and takes lead vocals, and it should have been a hit. The rest of the LP gets more progressive, surveying territory similar to what fellow travelers Funkadelic were exploring at the time (though without the sheer abandon of that amazing combo). The band, founded in the early '70s by session musician Martin Dumas Jr, This was their debut album showing their intense power and a full-on blaxploitationvibe. Their sound was mainly a mix of fuzzy guitars and tight horns arrangements, with lots of cool percussion thrown in. At times, you can tell there's almost a Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band vibe to their approach, but mixed with some influences, think Funkadelic for example. After the release of the Funk box set collection "What It Is" (reviewed on the old blog) many rare Funk groups were revealed to a new generation of grooveseekers. Rasputin's Stash was one such group. This was recorded in Miami,Florida. The 12 cuts represent a sound blended with Jazz,R&B and Funk instrumentals. They had 3 more albums released the latter two with unreleased material, they are an aquired taste not for everyone.

Goldie And The Gingerbreads - Thinking About The Good Times · Complete Recordings 1964-1966 (2021 + Booklet) Ace - Rare R&B/Soul/Boogaloo/Hammond/Northern/Pop (FLAC 372MB)

Again thanks to the very early Northern Scene (Then termed Soul/Mod) in the 1960,s i became aware of this dynamic Girl Group from Gotham in New Jersey with their vibrant dancers and multi instrumentalists to boot, very unusual back then to see gals so musically proactive...In that enticing, enthralling school of 1960s “girls with guitars”, Goldie & the Gingerbreads are top of the class. Self contained and accomplished as instrumentalists, with an eminently soulful vocal prowess, the Gingerbreads remain true pioneers of women with a fascinating history to tell. Born in the discotheques of Gotham,New Jersey, Goldie & the Gingerbreads were a popular club act with a handful of recordings under their belt when an admiring Animals caught them on a NYC visit in late 1964. They were swiftly “Imported” into the UK, the group scored a hit with "Can’t You Hear My Heartbeat" and went on to tour with the Rolling Stones, Kinks and others, as well as maintaining a high visibility in the UK on their own. They made several more worthy if unsuccessful discs with producer Shel Talmy before splitting in 1967.  "Thinking About The Good Times” is the first ever Goldie & the Gingerbreads collection, and it’s a fine testament to their undoubted abilities. Gathering together their sessions for Scepter, Decca and Atlantic, the versatility of the group is quite apparent on tracks that range from chunky beat and R&B (‘Look For Me Baby’, ‘Think About The Good Times’) through dramatic soul balladry (‘That’s Why I Love You’, ‘Little Boy’) to classic girl group sounds (‘Sailor Boy’, ‘Something Beautiful’). Ace’s package also benefits from first generation source material that includes several unissued titles. All three surviving members of the group, Genya “Goldie” Ravan, Ginger Bianco and Margo Lewis contribute to a lengthy oral history of the Gingerbreads’ career, and opened their personal files for a feast of visuals in the 40-page CD booklet thats a fascinating read guys. No studio albums ever released only 10 x 45,s 7 unissued tracks are here. Still played on the northern scene.

Blue Magic Major Harris Margie Joseph - Live (2006) Collectables 2 X CD - Live Soul (FLAC 572MB)

First time ever i,ve had a request for a live album & flac also requested ?, and this is a cracker!...Philly soul magic recorded in New Jersey at the Latin Casino Club! This unique little set offers a wonderfully different look at the hit Philly sound that was bubbling strongly on Atlantic Records during the 70s as it features 3 of the label W.M.O.T.s(We Men Of Talent) Artists contracted at that time. Margie Joseph had an unreleased album with Dexter Wansel never issued, i would love a copy of that!  This was a live special performance perhaps to showcase the labels talents, who know,s ?. Originally released on WMOT records in Philly. On here their singing together on the same songs, in really special combinations that make the album way more than just a typical live set! Although backings were handled by Vince Montana, and production is by Norman Harris, the overall sound of the record is much earthier, more open, and spontaneous than any of the artists' work coming from Sigma Sound studios and the album's a great illustration of the "real" world in which these singers lived and performed, which is somewhat different than the near perfect Sigma studio albums. For a live album i forgot how good this set is combinationa and all its great & a double album!

Various Artists – Zell's Girls J&S, Zell's, Baton And Dice Recordings 1955-1970 (2007 + Booklet) Ace - Rare Doo-Wop/R&B/Soul/Northern (MP3 165MB)

"Zell’s Girls" (now deleted from stock) was the fourth Ace CD to be drawn from the catalogue of Zelma “Zell” Sanders, the Harlem based songwriter/producer/manager who for two decades ran the very collectable J&S, Zell’s, Dice and other labels in New York. The collection comprises 28 all female doo wop, R&B, soul and girl group sides spanning the years 1955 to 1970, all but one of which makes its legit CD debut here. Zell Sanders got her start in the music biz with the Hearts. Contained here are their second and fourth singles, "All My Love Belongs To You and Going Home To Stay", both released on Baton in 1955. The latter song marks the recording debut of future soul star Justine “Baby” Washington. (The group’s remaining six Baton sides can be found on “The Baton Label: Sol’s Story”, CDCHD 505.) The Hearts’ career spanned over a decade and a half, during which time some two dozen ladies passed through the group’s ranks. "No Turning Back For Me and Your Little Toy" are plucked from their very rare “I Feel So Good” LP of 1970. Meanwhile, the group released the $1,000 rated "Where Are You Tonite" as the Jay Netts (two words) and "Suffering With My Heart" as the Endeavors, the latter featuring lead vocals by Lezli Valentine. Zell Sanders launched the J&S label in 1956. Among the initial batch of releases was "What Makes Me Love You Like I Do" by the Pre-Teens, an acme of “kiddie doo wop” today valued at a whopping $1,500. One of the most revered female doo wop groups, the Clickettes recorded five singles for Dice, of which "To Be A Part Of You" was the last. The Kadak’s were basically the same outfit as the Kodaks/Kodoks, who recorded for Fury Records in 1957. By 1960 the group was down to just one original member, but sounded as Frankie Lymon-esque ever on their J&S single, "Don’t Want No Teasing". Rita Zell and Neice DeZell are one and the same person separated by a decade. She released two singles on J&S: "I Don’t Understand You No More" as Rita in 1960 and the Aretha-style "Last Night" as Neice ten years later. In 1962 Sanders launched Zell’s, her fourth label. Among the first releases were "Give Our Love A Chance and Oh Come Back Baby" by Ada Ray and "Stay Away From My Baby" by Taffie Lee. Johnnie Louise Richardson’s (Zell’s daughter), most important role at J&S was as the singing partner of Joe Rivers in the duo Johnnie & Joe, of "Over The Mountain, Across The Sea2 fame. Included here is Johnnie’s solo update of the song, released in 1970 as Miss Johnnie, along with 2Every Night The Same Time", a previously unissued recording of similar vintage. The story of the Jaynetts (one word) is almost as tangled as that of the Hearts and involves many of the same vocalists. To cut a long story short: In 1963 Zell Sanders began a working relationship with songwriter-producer Abner Spector. The first fruit of the merger was "Sally, Go ’Round The Roses", released on Spector’s Tuff label as by the Jaynetts, a name not seen on a record label since 1958. "Sally"… topped the charts, but Sanders, dissatisfied with her share of the proceeds, soon withdrew from the deal and tried in vain to cash in with a string of Jaynetts singles on J&S. The best of these are contained here. I,ve been diggin my crates for this all day after a request. The thing with a lot of older music is it sounds no better in flac than mp3 so ive chosen the latter as less disc space is used up..great album with some top rare NORTHERN dancers included. Once i dig out the other 3 albums mentioned above they will be reviewed also.

Sunday Review - The !!!! Beat - Volume 1 - Show 1 1966 January 31st - Legendary R&B & Soul Shows From 1966 + Booklet - Rare Soul (AVI 347MB 25 Minutes)

The start of a new series with 26 episodes from 6 volumes of DVD.......The !!!! Beat was a groundbreaking soul music television program broadcast out of Dallas in 1966, it was the brainchild of music impresario William “Hoss” Allen. Allen, a native of Gallatin, Tennessee, had made a name for himself on WLAC in Nashville an all black music programming radio station in Nashville. Calling himself “The Hossman,” the White Allen built a formidable business network of music publishing interests, record production, artist management, and talent booking. He helped launch the careers of Otis Redding and James Brown. Allen went to work for Chess Records in 1960 and promoted that label’s releases throughout the South. In 1963 he left Chess and returned to WLAC at Nashville. He also started a new label, Hermitage Records, and produced records for many other labels. He had the good fortune of being able to draw on an impressive talent pool of R&B/Soul artists in the Nashville area. Inspired by the short lived, first all-black music television show, "The Night Train", that aired on WLAC-TV in Nashville in 1964, Allen adopted this concept and pitched it to Show Biz Productions, an independent television production company in Nashville. The company accepted Allen’s idea but insisted that the program be filmed in colour. At that time, the WFAA television studio in Dallas was one of the very few independent television stations in the South that possessed colour video capabilities. “Hoss” Allen chose Texas bluesman Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown, an artist he had recently produced on his Hermitage label, to lead the house band, known on the show as The Beat Boys. He also recruited saxophonist David “Fathead” Newman, who had performed with Ray Charles and was a resident of Dallas at that time, to lead the horn section. On January 31, 1966, shooting for The !!!! Beat began and continued through the spring. A total of twenty six half hour shows were shot, divided into two thirteen episode seasons. Gatemouth Brown wrote a catchy theme song, and “The Hossman,” the only White star on the program, hosted the show. His premiere opening exuded a hip flair with his greeting, “Well, salutations out there swingaroonies. My name is Bill Allen. Everbody calls me Hoss….Welcome to The !!!! Beat, with a great segment of entertainment coming up right now.”......Allen booked all the acts for the show and recruited almost all of the musicians from four specific areas: Nashville, where he managed many of the acts; Chicago, where the artists were signed to Chess Records; New Orleans, the city where Allen owned part interest in a booking agency; and Texas, which offered a pool of local and available talent. Gatemouth Brown and the house band were the only musicians who received pay. The reward for all other performers rested in the television exposure and free promotion of their records. The program went on the air in the summer of 1966. The Strickland Corporation (manufacturer of Royal Crown hair dressing) sponsored the show, and thirteen stations in major urban markets and smaller southern cities carried the program. The !!!! Beat usually aired on weekend afternoons or late night slots. The show consisted of a balance of live performances with the house band and lip synched numbers. A group of black go-go girl dancers added youthful energy to the set and made for “a fascinating visual time capsule.” According to the program’s liner notes produced by Bear Family Records (2005), “This was groundbreaking stuff, with a strong element of racial pride.”  The guest musicians on the show ran the gamut from famous black artists of the day to virtual unknowns. A wealth of Texas soul and R&B performers gained exposure to a wide audience. Freddie King, Barbara Lynn, and other artists of the Lone Star State appeared on The !!!! Beat. The show's star power included guest shots of Lou Rawls, Etta James, Percy Sledge, The Ovations, Bobby Hebb, Sam & Dave, and Otis Redding. Halfway through the first season, Johnny Jones of Nashville replaced Gatemouth Brown as bandleader, because Brown could not read music. Jones in turn brought in his own horn section. Brown later left the show. The program faced various challenges. Sometimes musicians arrived late or even failed to show at all, causing problems in the timing of the segments. Artists also showed up unannounced. Host “Hoss” Allen, who suffered bouts of alcoholism, was at times “noticeably inebriated” and his commentary “disjointed.” But, according to Bear Family Records, “…nobody cared. It was about the music and the music was great.” For the most part, audiences regarded The !!!! Beat with indifference, though the show was a hit in Birmingham, Alabama. One racial backlash occurred in Alabama with a cross burning on the lawn of a TV station. Local advertisers pulled their sponsorship, and no additional episodes were filmed. Otis Redding hosted the final episode in place of Allen, who was too intoxicated to appear. After its initial run, no re-runs were ever aired. Allen returned to Nashville and WLAC and eventually entered rehab in 1971 and stayed sober until his death in 1997. The !!!! Beat remained relegated to the obscure annals of music history, with a few surviving bootleg tapes sought by soul music fans. Willie Nelson purchased the Show Biz Productions catalog. Eventually in 2005 Bear Family Records released the entire series on DVD which i purchased. Fantastic shows from legends we all know and love!...This was the only show reviewed on the old blog.
