The Voltage Brothers - Throw Down (1978) Lifesong LP PROMO - Rare Soul/Funk/Jazz (MP3 93MB)

When the Voltage Brothers' self-titled debut album failed to sell, the ten-member horn band opted to try something different on this album, "Throw Down". While The Voltage Brothers owed a creative debt to the Blackbyrds and Pleasure (among others) and favored a jazz-influenced approach to funk, Throw Down isn't as consistently jazz-minded. This time, the harder funk tracks ("Telephone," "Throw Down") are closer to the Bar-Kays and the other material ranges from Philadelphia influenced soul ("Wonder Where You've Gone") to glossy, Tavares like disco ("Lifetime Guarantee of Love"). The most overtly jazz minded thing on the LP is "The Prophet," a jazz-funk instrumental that wouldn't have been out of place on one of Herbie Hancock's albums with the Headhunters and my pick of the album. Throw Down was also a departure from the Voltage Brothers' first album in that it found them working with more than one producer. Gene McDaniels, who produced The Voltage Brothers, also produced half of Throw Down; the other half was produced by Terry Cashman and Tommy West. Overall, Throw Down isn't a bad record  although not breathtaking, it's competent and likable. But, commercially, Throw Down didn't perform any better than the Voltage Brothers' previous album. The vast majority of 1970s R&B lovers didn't even know that Throw Down existed, and the Voltage Brothers broke up without recording a third album. This is now very rare and in demand with collectors world wide. Its always the albums that bomb out & years later going for big money & indemand with the clubs.I would have liked it in flac moxy but this will do. Not a lot of info out there bout these guys. Not a bad album though!
