Deep Soul Records was a record label established by Dave Godin, David Nathan and Robert Blackmore in the UK in 1969 to release American soul music singles that issued often obscure but worthy examples of the genre. The label was a subsidiary of Soul City Records running along-side the parent company. Its release run was limited to six singles only between 1968 and 1970. These records are now highly sought after by collectors. The label was re-established by Ace Records in 2016 with a further 15 singles released maintaining the original label logo. Dave Godin was a label owner, record store owner, music journalist & fanatical soul music enthusiast and a very nice guy to boot. He invented the phrase “Northern soul” to describe the affection
those north of Watford had for obscure and danceable soul records with that irresistable 4 x 4 beat and
also coined the term “deep soul” to describe perhaps his first love,
the heart stopping, gut wrenching soul ballads that came out of black
America in the Sixties and Seventies.I had the great pleasure of knowing dave and we bumped into each other fairly frequently over the years. His main claim to fame arrived via his fine columns in the Blues and Soul Publication. Dave contributed to that magazine for nearly 30 years. A very caring, loving, softly spoken and articulate man. He will always have a place in my heart for just being him and all he did to further Soul music in the Uk Dave sadly passed away in 2004.....So its great to see the entire catolog featured here in its entirity for your pleasure courtesy of 2 great friends of mine and the blog...Deep soul at its very best & a few great fave dancers of daves!

What a great initiative!!! Thanks to Oldsoulrebel & ELtel for making me relive those good times to find some nuggets in this monument that was Soul City at 17 Monmouth Street, London, W.C.2 and where I saw Dave Godin for the first time in 1969.
A great servant of Soul music.

Oldsoulrebel,ELtel and AMM, you guys are deep soul yourselves. AMM, What a touching tribute for your buddy, Dave. Just missed meeting him in the late 90s. He just left the great Val Shiveley R&B Records in the suburbs of Philly as I was walking in. Val loved the guy.

Great post. I used to love his record reviews and his column in Blues and Soul Magazine. I'll always be gratefull for him championing Doris Duke.
Many thanks , plus rare singles. The Hesitations,Maurice Williams and other new for me
Well I'm slow! All I remember is a great record shop a few blocks from Covent Garden Opera where I picked up the Valentinos It's All Over Now. This has to be Dave Godin's shop. Went there a few times from Brighton. The 60's was such a great time. Still is really.
Brings back memories of my trips to the shop in Monmouth St back in the sixties. Dave was unique and a great loss to our music.
