Kent 300 - Various Artists - Further Adventures Of Mod Jazz (2008) - Rare Mod Soul/Jazz/Blues (FLAC)

Kent released 9 CD,s in this series and this was the 5th album released....this is the genre that won’t lie down. We have lashings of Hammond, smoky sax and solid beats for the feet, the very essence of this series. This latest issue is right up there with the best. Its the first one of this series featured on the blog as i am always battling againt time and cant post up everything, i wish i could at one go...lol!....back to this great album ...the unlikely form of Mr Mac Rebennack, aka hippy, blues brother Dr John, starts us on these adventures with an organ-based mover called ‘The Point’. Similar instrumentation can be found on the next tracks by Leo’s Five and Bro Jack McDuff, before we switch to cool blues from the great Albert King who swings like a pollster at election time on ‘C. O. D.’. LA keyboardist Hank Jacobs takes us on a soul instrumental diversion, aided and abetted by the brilliant arranger Arthur Wright. West Coast producer Kent Harris unearthed a superlative version of the jazz classic ‘Walk Tall’, thought to be by Michelle Harris-Spivey, but sounding so fantastic that I can’t believe this does not conceal a more established artist. Another jazzy vocal and arrangement comes from 1950s LA, R&B bandleader Chuck Higgins on a big brassy version of ‘All Around The World’ aka ‘Grits Ain’t Groceries’(Little Milton).Fortuitously the Ike Turner and the Ikettes Modern tapes turned up a couple of gems, a fabulous jazz/blues work out that kent named ‘Daddy’s Blues’ and a studio jam for ‘Camel Walk’ not used on the Ikettes 45.  liberated here for your enjoyment. Bobby Donaldson’s ‘Bash Dance’ is probably as mainstream as we ever get. That’s not at all surprising, as label owner Al Sears came from that jazz world. Kent  have added the introductory title announcement that fell off the issued 45 mix. Brother Miles Grayson (Charles Wright Band) leads us onto a Latin curve with his ‘Sweet Bread’, LA’s attempt at out selling those NYC watermelons. More sensual Latin vibes  come from the groovily named Richie & The PS 54 School Yard and then the Afro Blues Quintet do what it says on the can to Clarence Paul’s ‘La, La, La, La, La’. A sideways shuffle brings in soul singers Dee Clark and Jerry Butler with album tracks that show us they were indeed multi talented vocalists and also serve to remind us that Vee-Jay had a big jazz catalogue too. Kent were lucky enough to get in touch with the Flodavieur Polk that Daddy Dave Polk named his label after. Kent were chasing some Northern gold from her very obscure indie label, they found this short but sassy side, ‘Play It Cool’, from the undeniably hip Billy Larkin.Memphis combo the Merits cut the atmospheric and exotic ‘Arabian Jerk’ for Goldwax’s subsidiary Bandstand label, more of a cool groove than a jazz jam. The same is true of old Kent LP favourite Booker T Averhart, a Texan instrumentalist whose career spanned many years, whereas George Braith’s preference for cantaloupes to the aforementioned watermelons is strictly a jazz thang. There are several more pounds of atmosphere from the much loved jazzster Googie Rene and his combo on a laid-back, but very worthy ‘Soul Zone 65’. Richard Berry is so far on the R&B side of things that some purists may even question his jazz credentials, my response to that is never mind the genre, feel that dancebeat. This is Kent country after all. And finally: what a way to see out a jazzy party with a moody Memphis soul instrumental groove, punctuated by the sound of retching. The MOD/NORTHRN scene,s have always embraced albums such as this and i will try to post the rest of this superb series fron the masters at Kent!

Dancin' Cat Connoisseur Collection Vol. 15 - The Great Wigan Cover Up 2 - Rare Soul

I decided to break the sequence of these Connoisseur series just this time to include the TRUE TRACKS as an EXTRA BACK COVER. Ive also updated the covers for part 1 of The Great Wigan Cover Up for you all after repeated requests from a lot of you for the true artists/titles. Having been on the scene for more years than i care to mention it was a piece of cake doing this as i have the 45,s and it stems a lot of confusion with this silly practice way back on the scene of "covering up" records. This is one of the best albums in the series and most of the 45,s are still fetching huge amounts of money! Its the first time both vols have been cracked and songs uncovered.as far as i know, been a mystery to their ID for years....till now.

Wood, Brass & Steel - Welcome To The Party - The Complete Recordings 1973-1980 - 2 x CD + Bonus + Booklet - Soul Brother (2021) Rare Soul/Jazz/Funk (FLAC)

After a request ive been searching for this great double album from a very good set of artists with a fine pedigree in soul music. They recorded 3 studio albums one that was never released on astroscope and all three are featured here. Wood, Brass and Steel were the last and the most famous house band of the All Platinum and Sugar Hill Records groups of labels run by Sylvia and husband Joe Robinson. Although they recorded many tracks for themselves and on even more for other artists at the Englewood New Jersey studios in the 70's and early 80's, the band was formed in Hartford Connecticut and their roots go back to Cincinnati and Dayton, Ohio in the late 60s. But read the booklet its all in there!

Extremely rare one off album for Gold, brainchild of Avelino Pitts. The bands real name is Welfare. but because of contractual problems with motown, who they were previously under contract with, they released these motown recorded tracks as Gold so they didnt get a lawsuit. Read the interesting booklet provided , the whole story is in there! A stunning album split between Deep/sweet & Funk!

Percy Mayfield - His Tangerine And Atlantic Sides (2004) Rhino - Rare R&B/Soul (FLAC)

Percy was a very popular R&B vocalist and composer back in the day. he was born in 1920 in  Minden, Louisiana, and passed in 1984, Los Angeles. Though maybe mostly known for penning the classic "Hit the Road, Jack", Mayfield himself was a major performer for the Specialty label in the first half of the 50s delivering slow blues ballads with his smoky voice reminiscent of Charles Brown. His biggest hit was the 1950 "Please Send Me Someone to Love", an R&B standard covered by many singers since then.  The good-looking Mayfield was nearly killed in a 1952 car accident that left his face severely scarred and may have had a limiting effect on his career as a performer. In 1961 Ray Charles made his "Hit The Road, Jack" a major hit, and Mayfield was subsequently hired by Charles's Tangerine Records as a songwriter.  After a decade in the background, Mayfield had a comeback and released several albums late 60s to early 70s on Tangerine and RCA. On these albums, Mayfield's smoky baritone voice is often heard accompained by top jazz session-players of the era.He also found fame on the dancefloors of the UK northern scene. more info on him over HERE

Willie West - Can't Help Myself (2012) Aviara - Rare Soul/Blues (MP3)

Another album i wished i never sold but got the trusty back up ripped...There,s a very thin line between Soul & the blues, but this guy nails both in only a way a New Orlean can do it!..The tag of Soul Survivor may be over-used, but it is well suited to Willie West, another gifted singer and songwriter from the New Orleans area who has never gotten the breaks he deserved or credit he was due, despite a long and active career in music. Born Millard Leon West, Willie West grew up in Raceland, Louisiana listening to Eddie Bo, BB King, and Bobby Blue Bland. As a youngster, he frequently went to Thibodaux to see his idols Guitar Slim and James 'Thunderbird' Davis. Guitar Slim would sit outside of his room at Sugar Bowl drinking wine and playing his guitar. Too young to go into the Sugar Bowl, Willie remembers looking in the window and seeing Guitar Slim hanging from the rafters playing his guitar. 'Thunderbird' Davis would have a profound effect on Willie in terms of singing and showmanship. Bitten by the bug, Willie formed his first band the Sharks with his cousin on guitar. Playing clubs like Tee Maws and the Two Tone in Raceland and the surrounding bayou Lafourche area, Willie and the Sharks were spotted by Dotty Lee, the owner of Rustone records. Dotty sent the band to Cosimo's studio to record Willie's first record 'You Stole My Heart' on Rustone. The record failed to hit. Willie's second effort on Rustone "It's No Use To Try" did well regionally after Baton Rouge deejays Diggy Doo and Rootie Tootie got behind when Dottie West got them a fifth of scotch. The record wound up being leased to Chess and re-released. While Willie got only $70 as his cut of the record sales, he did get a lot of club work opening up for Solomon Burke, Jimmy Reed, and Freddie King. He was too busy to take dates from promoter Percy Stovall. His last Rustone record paired him with white frat band Emmett and the Jakes on 'Willie Knows How.' Rustone records then folded. 'Porgy' Jones then got Willie signed to Connie LaRocca's Frisco records label. He cut a few records for Frisco including the Wardell Quezergue produced 'I'm Back Again.' None of records on Frisco became a hit, even with Danny White (Soul Legend) backing him on a few tracks. He then moved to New Orleans to work with Deacon John and the Ivories, Edgar Blanchard and the Gondoliers and Oliver and the Rockettes. Called Little Willie West, he was a dancing machine who bought his pants off the boys rack. He then signed to Allen Toussaint and Marshall Sehorn's Deesu label. He cut the 'Greatest Love' and 'Hello Mama' over pre-recorded backing tracks already used by Lee Dorsey. Released on Deesu, the record was doomed by the record's distributor Dover records, owned by Cosimo Matassa, going out of business. By the end of the sixties, Willie was singing with Deacon John's the Electric Soul Train. During this time, he cut a Toussaint produced record for Josie Records, with the Meters rumored to have provided backing on the tracks, 'Fairchild' and 'I Sleep With The Blues.' in the early 70s, he sang unaccredited on the Allen Toussaint produced soundtrack for the blaxploitation film Black Samson. After that, he cut one single for Warner brothers with most of the Meters on board. When Art and Cyril Neville left the Meters in 1977, Willie joined them until they broke up in the early 80s. Following the Meters, Willie performed on Bourbon Street on and off for the next twenty years. He also worked with Bobby Love in the Uptown Rulers. Starting in 1999, Willie released a few CDs. Following hurricane Katrina, Willie moved to the Minneapolis Saint Cloud area and has been there ever since, and is currently recording with the Finnish label, Timmion Records and released this album on Aviara Music,an affiliate of CDS Records. This album has since re-released elsewhere again. SOUL FANS DONT OVERLOOK THIS GUY ...A BIG MISTAKE!....More to come from him soon!

Willie And West - At Their Best (LP 1971 Stang) (CD 2011 Outta Sight) + Bonus Tracks + Mini Booklet - Rare Soul (FLAC)

This is one of the best soul albums ever to hit vinyl. From the original 10 tracks 4 became Northern Soul legendary dancers. This was their only album release under the name Willie & West. The guys were Willie feaster & John West hailing from Augusta, Georgia. Friends from school, they joined the local Gospel Choir at their church to hone in their skills and talent like most black music artists. They craved the bright lights and stardom so they moved to New York and joined Joe & Sylvia Robinsons STANG/ALL PLATINUM/TURBO stable in New Jersey where they went on to change their name to Willie & the Mighty Magnificents and record 2 more studio albums & more northern dancers. i have those lined up with bonus tracks also.  Too say this album is good is an understatement, its a classic!
