Marvin Gaye recorded this circa 1973 but Motown/Universal sat on it for years. The 45 was released in 2016 in Japan Only backed up with Donald Byrds backing track he released in 1973 on an the "Blackbyrd"album. This track was also released on the "I,m The Man" album(2019) i posted on the old blog but the track is shorter on there. In 2014 Motown/Universal/Blue Note released a 4 track 12 inch with Marvin Gaye on side 1 & Donald Byrd on the Flip. Both the 45 & 12 inch are going for very big bucks! The Mizell Brothers did 3 tracks in their session with Marvin Gaye but he only sang on two of the tracks, this one and ‘Women of the world’ but knowing that they wouldn’t be released on Motown the recordings were archived however as The Mizell’s had composed the songs and had secured a contract with Blue Note Records to produce a forthcoming and future Donald Byrd albums they gave Byrd two of the compositions which he subsequently recorded. His versions of WAWG and WOTW appear on the 1973 "Blackbyrd" and "Street Lady" albums respectively. When Blackbyrd was released in early’73 it marked a distinct change in direction for Byrd as he wanted a more contemporary electric ‘fusion’ sound away from the ‘straight ahead jazz’ genre of all his previous recordings and The Mizell brothers wrote and produced most of the tracks on the albums that subsequently followed Blackbyrd which initially divided purists but went on to become the best selling Jazz album of the year.I have,nt revied the Donald Byrd track as it,s already easily available. This was the first and only time that Motown/Universal & Blue Note ever collaborated on a project(as far as i know)..Wonderful Track that marvin could have fitted into any of his 1970,s albums when he was around....Enjoy!
