Thanks AMM nd Hakase for the excellent review of the Big Easy!!
Two antidotes about Mr. Toussaint.
My wife and I attended what was then unknown to anyone his final performance in New Orleans. It was an outdoor event, and he appeared, with Irma Thomas, on stage with the Funky Meters (same line-up as original Meters but with Brian Stoltz on guitar instead of Leo Nocentelli). Unbelievable night of music, when we were leaving, we were behind the stage waiting to cross the street and we saw Mr. Toussaint standing alone. I took the opportunity to walk over to him and let him know how much his music had meant to me. The man genuinely looked astonished, and shook my hand and thanked me profusely. He embodied class.
This album, and the last one issued by him (posthumously and called American Tunes) were both produced by Joe Henry. Henry is a musician in his own right (sort of in the vein of Americana) and is interestingly also the cousin of the pop star, Madonna. Henry first hooked up with Toussaint on an album that Henry produced called I Believe to My Soul, which features soul singers from the 60s, all working new songs. Its an amazing album which, in addition to Mr. Toussaint, also features Irma Thomas, Mavis Staples, William Bell and Billy Preston. Highly recommend it as well as the great album posted here.
Many thanks Hakase and AMM!
