Clyde McPhatter - Welcome Home (1970) Decca - Rare Soul (MP3)

I did a full length bio of him on the old blog so wont bore you to death with facts and figures as the music speaks for itself. One of THE greatest singers of all time. You could say a major influencer to other artists in the business in the soul/R&B world, Clyde McPhatter’s short life was marked by a steady stream of charttopping hits and unprecedented success. McPhatter achieved mainstream popularity in the early 1950s as the lead singer for Billy Ward & His Dominoes, applying the intensity of his well trained gospel tenor to the secular love songs of the group. This winning combination reached beyond McPhatter’s personal success to become a basic formula in R&B and soul music. Feeling stifled under the constraints of the Dominoes, McPhatter left in 1953 to form the Drifters. His unparalleled vocal style and name recognition helped create one of the most notable vocal groups in R&B. After being drafted in 1954 and serving a short stint in the Army, McPhatter embarked on a solo career. Although he continued to record hits like “A Lover’s Question” and “I Never Knew,” his alcoholism eventually eclipsed his distinctive and magical sound and led to his death from a heart attack in 1972 at the age of 39. Although neglected at the time of his death and unaware of his influence on music history, McPhatter had become one of the pioneer voices in Soul. many of his 45,s played to packed floors on the NNS.I can honestly say this man never made a record i disliked, which is rare even for me...A TRUE LEGEND!

Ike Noble & The Uptights - Look A Little Higher (2022) AOTN - Rare Soul/Funk (FLAC) Digital Download

The Up Tights were formed by Henry Bradley in Forrest City, Arkansas in March of 1967 while most of the band members were attending Lincoln High School. They took their name from the Stevie Wonder song "Uptight - Everything’s Alright.” Playing at school functions, they quickly branched out to playing bigger shows and headlined the 1968 St. Francis County Fair in Forrest City. The Up Tights first recorded for Action Records in Memphis as Noble and the Up Tights. The 45 featured an original song by singer, Izear “Ike” Noble Jr. titled “Don't Worry About It.” Henry Bradley was drafted into Vietnam in 1968.While he was away, the Up Tights continued with Henry’s brother, Arthur, taking over all the guitar duties. The band also hired a manager named John Mitchell. In 1968 the band met Joe Lee, who owned Variety recording studio in Jonesboro, Arkansas. For the band’s first recordings at Variety, Lee chose two originals by Noble titled “Look a Little Higher” and an updated version of “Just a Dream” which Lee released on his Alley Records label in 1968. Lee continued to record the band over the next several months. He liked to experiment in the studio and produced many versions of the group’s original songs, adjusting the mix and adding elements to each unique take. For the group’s second Alley release, they appeared simply as Ike Noble on the record label. Lee brought in a local songwriter named Charles “Jamie” Holmes, who had previously written for Alley records and Joe Keene’s studio in Kennett, Missouri. The resulting 45 from this collaboration was “It’s Bad” backed with “That’s What I Get,” two Holmes originals. Another Holmes original was unreleased at the time, but available here titled “There’s Gonna Be a Better Day Coming.”... Stax Records was interested in signing the group and wanted to re-cut "It's Bad" at their studio, but ultimately the label passed since they generally had a policy of working with Memphis based groups. As the band grew in popularity, they began appearing with and competing with Memphis legends, the Bar-Kays. The group’s biggest show in Arkansas was an opening slot at Barton Coliseum, one of the largest venues in the state, in Little Rock in mid-1969. As a result, the band was offered a spot on George Klein’s “Talent Party” television show on WHBQ in Memphis in July of 1969. Ike released 3 solo efforts on connowil & timeless record labels. The uptights 4 45,s are featured here less 1 side. a great album for all northern,Deep,& funk lovers.

Inner Life - Inner Life - LP (1981) Salsoul - CD (2013) Big Break Records- Soul + Booklet (FLAC)

The story starts with lead singer and soul powerhouse Jocelyn Brown.Born in 1950, and reared in a God-fearing family North Carolina, Brown began priming her vocal skills from the tender age of three in a church where all of her extended family sang. Though singing became second nature to her as she got older, Brown never fancied it as a career. "I wasn't really enthused about it," she admits."Because I was around them, I was used to it. It was familiar. But I never considered a future in singing. I wanted to be a schoolteacher and a veterinarian. But it didn't wind up being that way. But by the age of 16, constant prodding from her aunt Barbara Roy (one half of duo Barbara & Brenda, & lead with the wonderful group Ecstacy, Passion, & Pain, POSTED ON THE OLD BLOG) had finally convinced Brown to continue cultivating what she perceived as a natural gift. Roy and another relative had a singing duo called Barbara & Brenda that often moonlighted as background singers for different recording artists. And while Roy's prodding convinced Brown to consider her natural talent, it also came with a bit of tough love and jesting as encouragement to polish it "They used to tease me because they said I always sang the wrong notes," she laughs. "I wanted to go hang out and sing with them, and they would tell me to go sit down somewhere. I used to get really upset and frustrated, because I wasn't looked upon as a singer. So I didn't take singing seriously" But that frustration fueled her desire to measure up to her aunt and cousin's vocal standards. It wasn't long before they took notice of her improvement. And when a recording session called for a third vocalist, the pair decided it was Brown's time to shine. She soon began attending studio sessions in New York City, appearing on recordings as a backing vocalist for artists such as Gene Pitney and Peaches & Herb's 1967 album Let's Fall In Love. It suddenly dawned on Brown that this could be a palpable career after all. discovered that I could make some money at it," she admits. "Then my aunt suggested that I get a singing group together. And I did.The group was called Something Different." Brown made the move to Washington, DC to study at Howard University while making her rounds on the local music scene. It wasn't long before she gave into the pull of the Big Apple. By the end of the 1970,s Inner life was born and released their first album.I decoded to post this up to highlight Jocelyns superb talents that would go on to contribute to other groups:Change,Incognito & Weeks & co. Inner life were Patrick Adams, Leroy jackson, Stan Lucas, & Greg Carmichel who owned Red Greg Records and released the great Donna McGee album "Make It Last Forever"(POSTED ON OLD BLOG).The title track is one of the best records to ever see the light of day IMHO but Jocelyn,s effort featured here is equally as good if not better.Extra tracks on here not on the LP.

Harold Johnson Sextet - House On Elm Street - LP (1967) H.M.E. - CD (2000) V.C.S - Rare Soul/Jazz/Boogaloo (FLAC)

Back in the day when Ramsey Lewis "Wade In The water" ruled the dance floors, the punters/collectors scrambled around to get more of that infectious sound. Lo and behold Harold Johnson pops up, thanks to those digging northern jocks, and Harold delivered the goods on the HME imprint. At that time ramseys sound was so prominent in the clubs that copy cat soundalikes couldnt fail. Harold Only recorded 3 albums with the band and a couple of 45,s and a solo album. He surfaced a few years later as a member of The Devastating Affair where he went on tour all over the world with the Temptations & Diana Ross, and at Motown his further talents were exposed as a house writer/producer on several of their acts. This man has been a busy bee working for Herb Albert and writing songs for many big soul hitters Marvin gaye, Smokey,etc.. to many to mention. I picked up this CD for pocket change at a record fair....some great groovers on here! Stumbled over this gem at home whilst looking for other stuff, isnt it always the case!

Finished Touch - Need To Know You Better (1978) Motown LP Only - Rare Soul/Funk (MP3)

Have you ever bought an album for just one track when it was,nt available as a 45 in the UK or USA (but released in Brazil ?)..Thats just what i did with this album to obtain the killer track "New Frontiers" for Michael McGloiry,s brilliant guitar work that builds and builds ..pure bliss!...Still only availble on vinyl after all these years. I heard the track in a club in london played as a then new release, and thought "gotta get that" , what a floor packer! The band were led by kenny Stover who went on to join Leo,s sunshipp as producer/arranger on their excellent album "we need each other" which is again a one off as this, but what an album!..Back to this group Michael went on to stay at motown joining the group Switch.Strange thing is these guys were not officially a group or band they just happened to be singers/musicians employed at motown and got the break to record this album by sheer chance....having Jermaine Jackson as a buddy must have helped. A couple of tracks did ok chart wise but nothing to shout about.

George Benson - Walking To New Orleans - Remembering Chuck Berry & Fats Domino (2019) Provogue - R&B (FLAC)

George Benson gets back to basics on Walking to New Orleans, the jazz guitar legend's tribute to both piano pounding hit machine Fats Domino and the original rock guitar hero and poet, Chuck Berry. Walking to New Orleans was Benson's first recording since 2013's "Inspiration" the Tribute to Nat King Cole, but it couldn’t be more different. Where Benson embellished Cole's cool tunes with lush orchestral arrangements, Walking to New Orleans came about by getting down in a Music Row studio, with a quartet of first rate Nashville musicians. This was Benson's 45th studio album, and few sound as loose limbed and flat out fun.Its nice to see a legend such as george laying a tribute to his predecessors for their ground work in the business.

Marva Wright - Born With The Blues (1993) - Soul/Blues + Booklet (FLAC)

New orleans songbird Marva was born in the city in 1948 and sadly passed there in 2010. Recording 10 studio albums, 2 live ones and guesting on a couple more for other artists she was on the fringe on breaking nationally untill her untimely death. this was her second studio album that was also released in the uk in 2006 under a different title on shout....In 1987, New Orleans was introduced to the up & coming R&B singer Marva Wright. Marva worked by day, gigged by night, and continued to sing gospel in church on Sundays. All the while, an ever loyal legion of fans followed her all over town to hear what they knew was going to be the next great R & B sensation to come out of New Orleans. Visions of another Irma Thomas, Barbara George, or Jean Knight danced in their heads. But things changed for Marva in 1987 when she opened for the legendary Koko Taylor. Gospel was, and is her passion, and R & B was a good living, but it was the blues for which she would soon become known. In 1989, Marva made her recording debut by contributing what would be considered by many the outstanding cut on the “Tipitina's In Person” compilation album. Appetites were whetted. Her fans wanted more. In 1990, they got it! Marva's first solo recording, “Heartbreakin' Woman”, captured the essence of her soul stirring voice and hip shaking stage persona. The phones were ringing louder, the gigs were rolling in, and the day job became a fond memory.
In 1993, Marva did it again! Just when fans thought this blues belting mama couldn't possibly out do herself, she went and did it once more. Born With The Blues, Marva's second solo recording and first for Sky Ranch Records is filled with the indelible Marva stamp that audiences in America and Europe have grown to recognize and love. Even when Marva covers someone else's song, it is still unmistakably Marva. Many singers have covered “Do Right Woman, Do Right Man”, but it's Marva's version that sends chills down your spine. It's Marva version that you will remember. She even makes the old Solomon Burke tune, “Can't Nobody Love You”, hers, and hers alone. Joined on this cut by the romantic, almost folksy strumming of Frederick Koella accompanying her on acoustic guitar, fans will be captivated by Marva's first foray into acoustic blues. But it is when she is doing original material, some of it written by her, some of it written and performed by a talented group of local writers and musicians, including New Orleans R & B legend, Tommy Ridgley, singer/writer/and arranger, Lenny McDaniel; and producer, Carlo Ditta, that the true Marva emerges. The searing vocals, the feel good music of her stage band, that has toured the world with her over the previous two years, makes everyone jump to their feet and dance the blues & soul.  Full album info in the booklet.Like so many artists on the verge of the bigtime robbed by death...so sad.

Various Artists - New Orleans R & B Crescent City Classics (2006) Acrobat 2 x CD + Booklet - Rare R&B (FLAC)

Long deleted and now expensive to purchase...I got this album as a new release and never thought about sharing it until i got into a conversation online with pmac. Most of these records were recorded at Cosimo Matassa,s J&M studios on rampart st..these are the original recordings as a lot are not up on youtube just remakes and live performances..Many soul fans in particular make the grave mistake of instantly dismissing these roots of our music..So do yourselves a favour, just sit down and let these gems take over control of your ears..Rather than me rant on, the BOOKLET has all the in depth info you need explained in great detail....Here,s an anecdote from Pmac native of NO..." I have some Fats’ stories!... First met him when I was in high school – he lived close to the school I attended. When I was a senior (1976) I had the “job” of leading the football team on neighborhood runs during the offseason to try to keep everyone in shape. We often passed Fats’ house and he was usually sitting on his front porch, beer in hand, and would wave and start singing “Hold that Tiger” as we passed (school nickname was Tigers). So, one day, he asks me to come back after the run because he has a “job” for me. I go back, and he brings me to the trunk of his Cadillac and opens it – there’s about 8 cases of Heineken stored there. Asked if I can bring them into his kitchen for him. Gladly do so, and when I go to leave he tells me to sit and “visit” for awhile, and he opens a beer and hands it to me. Sat there for about an hour drinking beer with Fats and talking about NO. When I leave, he hands me $20 and 2 6 packs.........Fast forward to 2008, a couple of years after Katrina. It’s a Sunday night in August and I’m at a bar (of course!) that was next to my then rental house, and drinking with a friend of mine,a pianist. Its getting late for a Sunday and we’re about to call it a night when his cell rings, and I can only hear his side of the call. He tells the person that he can’t do it tonight because he doesn’t have a car and its too far to take a cab. I take my keys out and wave them in front of his face and he quickly tells the person he can be there in 30 mins and writes down the address. So, I drive my friend to a house on the other side of the river, where he is to meet a friend of a friend, a woman who needs to get a piano tuned for her father who now lives with her. We pull up to the house, really nice 2 story one, and my friend says come in with him to keep him company. We knock on the door and a 40 year old African American woman opens it and thanks us for coming, because her dad now lives with her, and he’s not doing well, but she got him a piano to play and it needs to be tuned. my friend tunes it in about 15 mins, and the lady asks if we can wait a few more so that she can go get her dad from upstairs and see if he’s happy with it. Next thing you know, Fats is walking in the damn room. He sits at the piano and starts playing some of his classics and humming along. Stops and looks at us. Tells us thanks for coming out on a Sunday night, and he has a gift for us. Goes to a bookcase and pulls out 2 of his albums and autographs both, tells his daughter to go get some cold ones from the fridge and she comes back with a six pack of Heinekens. I told him the story about my high school job, and he laughed about it (said he remembered but I’m certain he was just being nice). He also handed my friend 3 $100 bills which he refused to accept"....Thanks for that pmac, intriguing story!...He sounds like a really nice guy.

Dirty Dozen Brass Band - Medicated Magic (2002) RopeaDope - New Orleans Soul/Funk/Jazz + Booklet (FLAC)

Ever since i discovered the joys of New Orleans music via Aaron Neville,Irma Thomas,Allen Toussaint,Ernie K Doe etc on the soul front i started to dig into the history of N.O. music and what made it tick. The area is like no other in the USA, its culture goes way,way back to the birth of the Blues and Jazz, with its links to Africa as strong than any other Black American community in the states. When Pmac turned me onto the superb TV series "TREME" where you can stream or download HERE.It explains the modern day lifestles of the inhabitants than i ever could. A superbly executed series with a mix of actors and musicians who come and go in the various storylines. Rather than me try to explain about the whole mash up in N.O. there are 2 great sites that answers the discerning listeners questions HERE AGAIN and about the BLACK INDIANS Brass Bands have been a part of New Orleans for a very long time, and still exert a lot of influence on the output of music from that great city today. According to Discogs this band have recorded 19 albums + This one since 1984 yet the band have been around since 1977, So perhaps Pmac a native of that great city can enlighten us ?. On this 10th studio album the guys are joined by the legend that is Dr John (Mac Rebennack), Norah Jones, Olu Dara, & Robert Randolph. Here,s info on the  BAND. I for one love the musical mash up they provide. I,m sorry its taken me years to appreciate all the musical styles in New Orleans, Unique is an understatement!

Another very good group that only had the one album release and several 45,s. Their base was in Los Angeles & according to discogs  featured Chris Higgins,Barnett Williams, & Eddie Gurren The self-titled album was recorded 1978 for the ALA label and released via Atlantic Records. This is the expanded japan rip from 2014.a very good album with a mix of dancers and sweet soul. Eddie Gurren was in a band called the gliders who released a few 45,s that went nowhere...apart from that not a lot of info. The first taster was an old spin on the NSS.
