Sunday Documentary - Is That Black Enough for You (2022) - 2 Hours 15 Minutes

Slightly different docu this week,This tracks the history of Black cinema, focused mainly on the '70s, with archival and new interviews with many of the key players from the era. It shows the birth of the Blaxploitation Movie an ethnic subgenre of the exploitation film that emerged in the United States during the early 1970s. The term, a mix of the words "black" and "exploitation", was coined in August 1972 by Junius Griffin, the president of the Beverly Hills Hollywood NAACP branch. He claimed the genre was "proliferating offenses" to the black community in its perpetuation of stereotypical characters often involved in crime. Though most of the Movies were "over the top" in their strory lines they did capture the mood of America in the 1970,s +. The interesting part for us is the soundtracks that ran alongside of them.

The movies, which is to say the way they look in that Technicolor, is just about the only thing I like about the 70s, so this should be right up my alley.
Incidentally, for a long time I couldn't picture anybody but Sigourney Weaver as Ripley. But then I saw Foxy Brown a few years ago and I think Pam Grier would've made an excellent Ripley herself. It's a shame she never got a chance in "proper" movies during that time.

I watched this a few weeks ago, and its def worth your time. Interesting trip down memory land and a cinema genre that was different, groundbreaking, and yet racist in tone.

I saw many of those movies back in the 70's. I'm very interested in how this documentary lays out the history of the genre. I definitely agree that there were some great soundtracks by various artists like Curtis Mayfield, James Brown, Issac Hayes, Dennis Coffey, etc. Thanks AMM!
