Wonderful release from Australia of lots of hard core artists from the New York stables of the above...
New York's Scepter and Musicor label groups were responsible for creating some of the 1960's classiest and most sophisticated pieces of Soul artistry. Dramatic and often adorned with lush orchestration, the brand of Soul these labels specialised in was a far cry from the raw, gutbucket sounds coming from America's south, but no less compelling or Soulful. Scepter had been founded in 1958 by housewife- turned-entrepreneur Florence Greenberg, established with money she had made discovering the Shirelles. Having bought into the small Tiara label, Florence had signed the group (comprised of classmates of her daughter's) and sold their contract to Decca after their debut single "I Met Him On Sunday" began making some noise. The money from from the buyout would be used to establish Scepter, who later re-signed the group after Decca was unable to repeat "I Met Him On A Sunday's"success. Scepter (and subsidiary Wand) would go on to forge a string of iconic hits through the 1960s and early 1970s, from artists such as Dionne Warwick, BJ Thomas, Chuck Jackson, The Kingsmen, Maxine Brown and The Shirelles. Though the label would issue records made in a myriad of genres throughout its lifespan, it is the sophisticated "uptown" production of recordings such as these selections that for many epitomises the "sound" of Scepter Records. Musicor Records had been formed by songwriter/producer Aaron Schroeder in 1960, and while their commercial bread-and-butter was Country from George Jones and Melba Montgomery, and Pop from Gene Pitney, they issued a not-inconsiderable quantity of Soul records. These titles often utilised the same New York songwriters, arrangers and producers. !00,s of 45,s went on to grace the turntables of many northern venues in England. All the info you want is contained in the booklet. A great album of pure haunting soul with a smattering of dancers from these great labels!
