Various Artists - Eccentric Soul - The Way Out Label (2014) Numero 053 - Rare Soul (FLAC 489MB)

The label was started in Cleveland Ohio by local businessmen and music collectors Lester Johnson & Bill Branch in the early 1960s as a outlet for Cleveland's large African American music community, who saw the market in releasing R&B/Soul 45,s. As the music scene moved toward soul, Way Out started releasing records in that style, with Jesse Fisher, the Springers and the Sensations as their lead acts. The label released 39 x 45,s before folding. As a parent company they oversaw Big jim records owned by local footballler/actor Jim Brown who released only 2 x  45,s of which 3 of the sides are featured on the album. They also oversaw BOS records a Gospel outlet that released 26 x 45,s to my knowledge. One side is featured from the Every day label (1 x 45 released) & the Jenesis label had 3 releases with only one of the 45,s featured here. The label soon beacame a favourite with collectors with the eye catching design of the label and soul content that poured forth from that region. The Northern Jocks in the UK soon gobbled up as many of the dancers they could with Jesse Fishers " Your Not loving A Beginner" going balistic and also my personal fave from that label. I was hoping a Volume 2 would follow to complete the rest of their released 45,s and unreleased tracks i know are in the can, nevertheless a brilliant and essential release for all lovers of soul.

Jasmine 3038 - Titus Turner - Taking Care of Business, 1955 - 1962 (2015 ) 2 x CD (FLAC 556MB) Rare R&B/Soul/Blues

Titus was born in Atlanta in 1933 & passed there in 1984. Strangely enough only 2 studio albums and 60 x 45,s to his name, but a shedload of unreleased tracks have laid in the vaults of most of the record companys he was with. Although he was primarily known as a successful songwriter, who penned a steady stream of R&B hits, Titus Turner enjoyed a parallel recording career. This unique compilation presents the very best of his own recordings between 1955-1962, for a half dozen different US record labels, viz: Wing, Atlantic, King, Glover, Jamie and Enjoy. Included are his US hits "The Return Of Stagloee", "We Told You Not To Marry" and "Sound Off (Duckworth Chant)" as well as the title track "Taking Care Of Business", which was hugely popular in the New York clubs. Also includes his original versions of songs like "All Around The World", "Big John", "Get On The Right Track Baby", "People Sure Act Funny" and "Soulville", which became hits for Little Willie John, The Shirelles, Ray Charles, Arthur Conley and Dinah Washington respectively. Several of these sides are serious collector's rarities, unavailable elsewhere on CD. Loved by Fans & Floorpackers alike...super stuff!

The California Playboys - Trying To Become A Millionaire (LP 1976 Loadstone - CD 2016 Manufactured Recordings Japan) (FLAC 181MB) Rare Soul

HOLY GRAIL TIME!.. The California Playboys served as the backing band for R&B singer Lester Young (not the jazz man) on a series of 45 singles, before branching out to record a sole full-length LP under their own name.  W. C. Stone's long standing San Francisco label put together a Five Man Band using his own long term session men to create one of the world's most wanted Soul albums, as it includes not one but fully four killer Northern Soul dance cuts that never achieved 45 release. The band were arranger Robert Jacobs (guitar), Julian Vaught (second guitar and sax), Lenell Salone (guitar), Kelvin Dixon (vocals and drums), Jackie Rogers (trumpet), Kenney Dunaway (guitar) and William Smith (lead singer).Record dealer Rip Lay acquired the whole of the Loadstone and distributed vinyl in one hit, back in the late 1970s. "Trying To Be A Millionaire"  mixing fluid vocals spiced up with a little Latin, driving subtle Funk undertones and lively crisp vocals, this is Brilliant! The tracks..."Double Love" a spectacular reworking of the 1963 Loadstone recording by The Chandeliers, inspiring Lennell Salone guitar licks lift this dancer up and beyond. "Just Say A Four Letter Word" Many consider this the best track, it is one to take a few listens then it just grows on you, indelible vocal group Northern Soul. "She,s a real Woman" loosely fitting Sweet Soul ballads really work as the clarity of the vocals is heighten by the lack of overpowering back tracks. Supremely naive and beautifully delivered and the lead vocal sounds like Roshell Anderson. The other two tracks are every note as good - such a highly talented band of musicians who with the presence of Bay Area studio Prince - W.C. Stone crafted something extraordinarily special that day in 1976. My LP is worn but CD tracks have added time from the original masters !..WHAT AN ALBUM!...Long forgotten tracks i have,nt heard played on the scene for donkeys years, yet all Highland Room classics!..ALL KILLER NO FILLER!

Charles Mann - Say You Love Me Too (1973 - Vinyl Only Release) ABC - Rare Soul (FLAC 239MB)

Repost/Upgrade to flac from the old blog by request. One of the best philly soul albums ever recorded. Charles Mann was born in Atlanta, Georgia in 1949 & passed in 1991. He was a R&B songwriter, soul singer, record producer and musician. He worked during the 1970s and was very active in Philadelphia during the Philly Sound explosion. He built up a reputation as a writer and performer in the Atlanta area initially, which allowed him to be spotted by Jay Lasker, then president of ABC Records, who signed him for the label at the beginning of 1973 as a songwriter, often in partnership with the legendary Dave Crawford, he wrote and composed for artists such as B.B. King, The Mighty Clouds of Joy and Nature's Gift. He obtained five hits in the R&B Top 100, including one hit in the Top 10 (I Like to Live the Love by B.B. King in 1973).As a solo singer, he had a minor hit in 1973 with the song '"It's All Over", a track from his Philadelphia recorded album reviewed here today also Produced by Dave Crawford, the title track reached #36 on the Billboard R&B chart, as well as gaining extensive play on the UK Northern Scene, so much so that my good friend John vincent the main jock at Northern Club SAMANTHAS in Sheffield adopted it as their ending record. From 1977, he worked as a writer, arranger and producer for two labels owned by a company based in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, which had to stop its activities in 1980 for illegally marketing bootleg recordings. Only 2 studio albums recorded and a few 45,s but this album is a Soul Masterpiece IMHO and still in great demand with collectors.

Various Artists - Smooth Sailing (2023 Vinyl Release ) Charly - Rare Soul (FLAC 436MB)

An exclusive haul of Seventies Soul for the collector, enthusiast and lover of feel good Soul Music taken from a variety of rare 45,s..laden with a precious rare soul cargo anthologized from the dust of forgotten 45s and LPs. And it’s “Smooth Sailing” all the way with the seldom heard, falsetto rendering of the Temptations 1971 Detroit classic that bears the album title and represents the charly labels continuing aspiration to blend the obscure with the crème of American black music royalty. Here we celebrate the overlooked Freddy Briggs (aka Coldwate Stone), the former Chicago Gangsters (the Harmonics), the former Metros (Liberation), the unknown Mary Mundy, and the rarest of the rare offering by Chuck Ray. By contrast also showcased is the largely ignored recordings by the likes of Prince with 94 East, chart topping Al Wilson  (infamously quoted by Donald Trump on his ill fated campaign trail), Grammy Award winner Al Jarreau, America’s TV cop Christie Love aka Teresa Graves, and multi chartbusters the Ohio Players. Charly records always known to dig for those obscure gems!

The Teri Nelson Group - Sweet Talkin' Teri - (1968) Kama Sutra (Vinyl Release) - Rare Soul (FLAC 113MB)

RARE SOUL BONANZA TODAY!......The Northern Scene has over the years introduced to me some artists i would otherwise never have heard. This album contains several very rare dancers (not released on 45 but found through a few Demo,s) from a one off album of uptempo soul. Played out at The Golden Torch club (Stoke On Trent). The rare version of "S.O.S heart In Distress" (Christne Cooper on Parkway) is here. Although the name suggests otherwise, this was not a group. By contrast it was named for Teri Nelson, a then young female vocalist from Harlem, New York. During the late 1960s, the Super K Production company offered the then eighteen year old soloist a one year contract. After recording a few singles, Nelson's studio sessions were compiled into an album, which the Kama Sutra label released in 1968 purportedly without her knowledge or permission and promoted it as a group effort, the artists pictured alongside Nelson on the album's cover are backing vocalists The Crystals from the recording sessions. Nelson withdrew from her arrangement thereafter disgusted at her treatment and vanished from the music business.

Eddie was a great pal and school friend of Snoopy Dean (real name Nathan dean) They both came from Miami and joined a group called the crowd pleasers where they released a couple of singles. The group morphed into The Third Guitar (Snoopys idea) and gained a cult following in Europe with their hard to obtain 45,s on Rojac & Living legend records. In 2012 Rojac released a short album of their recordings which will be reviewed next!...back to Eddie he recorded 4 albums and a handful on 45,s all sought after by collectors. Solomon Burke - The King Of Rock & Soul (1967) Atlantic Special - Rare Soul (FLAC 216MB)

This man is a true SOUL LEGEND  no argument....Philadelphia native Solomon Burke born 1940 passed 2010 had a difficult start to life in the tough Black Bottom area of the city, with his father having deserted the household by the time of his arrival. Burke’s mother Josephine Moore worked both as a nurse and a teacher, but she also combined this workload preaching as a pastor, meaning Solomon was born into a deeply religious household. The matriarch of the family was his grandmother, who had a  dream/premonition about Solomon twelve years before he was even born. Acting on this reverie, she founded Solomon’s Temple in preparation for his birth. When the child did finally arrive she quickly set about instilling her religious faith into the youngster. This resulted in him preaching at a very early age and he was involved in community work through Solomon’s Temple for a large part of his life. These early endeavours in front of audiences would stand him in good stead as the years passed. Granny Moore was also Solomon’s initial musical influence. She taught him to sing in a variety of different styles by helping him copy the voices he heard on the radio. During the early years of his singing career the music and religious sides of his life would sometimes seem at odds and cause him a deal of anxiety, with Solomon wondering if he had taken the wrong path. For now though he began to show both a natural singing and performing talent. When Solomon was nine his mother married Rabbi Vincent Burke and the youngster’s name was changed to Solomon Vincent MacDonald Burke. Being the older brother to six siblings, Solomon helped support the family with a variety of different jobs and schemes. This gave him a strong business ethic for making a fast buck, something that later on would occasionally managed to rub fellow performers up the wrong way. Now though, the money that he raised would keep the wolf from the door, while Burke developed his singing skills in a group called the Gospel Cavaliers. By the time they split, young Solomon was already a coveted talent, with many record record companies looking to pounce. In the end he signed with Apollo in 1955, issuing his first record Christmas Presents perhaps a little unwisely on Christmas Eve of the same year. Unfortunately this wasn’t a case of instant success, as his mainly gospel based material struggled to make headway. Between 1955 and the end of the decade Burke almost gave up on his dreams. Problems with his manager Kae Williams over unpaid royalties meant he was effectively prevented from working in music. Because of this he enrolled in college in order to study for a new career. In 1959 he had the chance to put his past behind him when offered a contract by the Singular record company. The session he undertook for the label in the winter of 1959 only saw release later, but brought him to the attention of larger concerns. Burke signed to Atlantic Records in 1960 at what was an opportune time for both him and the label. Atlantic had recently lost some of their big names in blues so needed someone to bolster their roster and their big-time set up would be able to push Solomon to new heights. His mix of natural talent and charisma would work wonders, bringing many years of solid success for Atlantic in the r&b and the US pop charts. Apart from his solo recordings Solomon also found time to issue a single as part of the Soul Clan, a glittering array of talent that also featured Joe Tex, Arthur Conley, Ben E. King and Don Covay. Solomon Burke’s star dipped in the 1970s, but he made a well-received good comeback in the early part of the 21st century with the Don’t Give Up on Me album on Fat Possum, which won a Grammy. By this time his health was a major concern. He struggled with his weight from his youth and by 2008 he was wheelchair-bound. He died two years later on 10th October 2010.The King Of Rock ‘N’ Soul shows Solomon Burke at the very peak of his powers. His backing band on these records was often stuffed with legends like saxophonist King Curtis and Bobby Womack, ensuring a vivid landscape for his soulful and perfectly judged vocal performances. The songs he was furnished with were first-rate, plus he himself was no mean tunesmith too. With 36 studio albums (yes i have them all-essential for a lunatic like me) 7 140 45,s he certainly left his mark on the world..again A TRUE SOUL LEGEND!

More significant labels from Detroit to make their mark with soul collectors & enthusiasts were De-to, Music Now, & to a lesser extent Detroit Sound Records. They ran from the 1960s-1970s and were founded by Dr. William Kyle Jr. Detroit Sound was mainly a Rock/Pop label though it did re-release records of a soul content into the 2000,s when the name was bought out. Those records will feature later, on the original releases.

The Kevin Fingier Collective - El Sonido De Fingier Records - (2023 Vinyl Version) Fingier/Acid Jazz (FLAC) - Rare Soul/R&B/Funk/Samba

The title means "The sound of Fingier Records"…This precludes the previous review. Over the past couple of years they have issued a series of stellar 7” singles on their label Fingier Records, headed up by Argentine producer Kevin Fingier. Known for their dedication to soul, R&B, raw funk and latin sounds, many of these have been near instant sellouts, finding themselves on collector sites selling for ten-times more to collectors old & new. This compilation brings these singles together onto one LP, with graphics and photography on a sleeve to match the sound and style of Fingier Records. It features the vocals of Diane Ward, Jo-Ann Hamilton and Gerri Granger, Brazilian singer Jose Dias and Senegalese vocalist/percussionist Abdoulaye Badiane, backed by the all-star Kevin Fingier Collective. A great opportunity to own these rare sides, and enjoy them in a new setting and context on a beautifully presented LP. "I see Fingier Records as an artistic project, more than a record label. And I try to apply that concept in every decision that I make for the song composition, the music production, the audio sound, the analog photographs and the graphic design. This compilation shows this vision perfectly", so says Kevin Fingier also adding "For the last two years there has been excitement and anticipation as each new single has appeared on Fingier Records, and an urgency to own each of their dynamic and sometimes scarce recordings". Kevin,s unique take on classic R&B, soul, funk and samba released through the Acid jazz Label. I cant get enough of this refreshing Label/Artists!
