Various Artists - Golden World Records - The Collection + Rare Scans - Rare Soul (MP3 483MB)

My wife has a big operation tomorrow so i wont be around guys.......Golden World Records along with Ric Tic, Wingate & J & W were all part of Eddie & Joanne Wingate’s Golden World stable in Detroit, close to Motown. In fact too close, as it really annoyed Gordy that many of his musicians were moonlighting as backing session artists and taking the Funk Brothers experience with them, even using writers like Richard Popcorn Wylie. It was the success of Edwin Starr that really changed things with "Agent Double O Soul" Gordy made Ed Wingate a huge offer ($2m – a lot of cash in 1966) he couldn’t refuse. So Edwin Starr was sold to Motown along with Gino Washington, JJ Barnes, Laura Lee, Al Kent, Rose Battiste, Freddie Gorman, & The Fantastic Four, and Motown ignored all the rest and killed off the successful opposition. Ed Wingates labels were Motown’s biggest competitors and in the same city, & Motown’s Funk Brothers were fined $1,000 each for moonlighting on “Agent Double O Soul” and many other recordings on those labels, calling themselves The San Remo Golden Strings. Wingates labels were a big threat to Motown, at that time they were outselling them in droves with their releases with dominance of Soul recording in the city, pioneered by musical director and artist Al Kent vision for success. Gordy was apparently ‘very unhappy’ even furious, at Ed Wingate’s success with the Ric-Tic labels release of “Real Humdinger” by J J Barnes that didn’t help the situation as it was very similar to many of Motowns records, (actually Gordy copied many of Wingates records) Gordy hated the idea of competition on his own doorstep and put a stop to it. Thats why initially in the UK Edwin Starr‘s hits were released on Polydor rather than Motown as Polydor had an existing claim to the UK distribution rights with Ric-Tic USA. In the 60,s Quite a few Ric-Tic, Golden world, Wingate records were obtained by soul enthusiasts in England that set off the birth of the Northern Soul Scene. The rest as you know is now musical history. This collection gathers everything released on Golden World apart from two sides and acetates found.....THE OTHER SIDE OF ED WINGATE......Ed Wingate was born in Georgia in 1919 & passed in 2006 'Uncle' Ed Wingate as he was known was Detroit's first black 'Godfather' who controlled most of the 'numbers' gambling in the city throughout the 1950s and 1960s and he became extremely rich, and powerful. His business interests included the '20 Grand' nightspot and hotel, his record labels, a taxi firm and many other investments that paid off handsomely. His involvement in the music business, in particular, allowed him to 'launder' huge amounts of 'dirty money' through the business by paying for everything in cash and then receiving the benefits of 'hit' records through legitimate means. in Ed,s favour he looked after his artists and employees very generously giving them money as gifts and buying homes for a few even paying the Funk brothers (san remo golden strings) far more than they received from gordy as he believed a happy crew was a well paid one.
