Various Artists - Wheedle's Groove - Seattle Funk, Modern Soul & Boogie, Vol. 2 1972-1987 (2014) Light In The Attic - Rare Soul/Funk (FLAC 478MB)

The first volume of Wheedle’s Groove shone a light on the formerly unheralded soul scene in 1960s and ‘70s Seattle, followed by Kearney Barton.  The on-going Wheedle’s Groove series continues to present a vast chapter of the city’s musical heritage that has little to do with long-haired rock dudes with guitars. Back in the day platform shoes and pimp hats were the order of the day. But unlike Volume I, Seattle’s soul scene did not stop in 1975. This album documents the period from 1972 to 1987, when funk was superseded by disco and modern soul. Heading into the ‘80s, artists in the Emerald City caught wind of the hip hop and electro scenes that were growing in bigger cities across America, and gave the music their own distinct spin. As the years unfurl in the tracks of Wheedle’s Groove Volume II, so does the recent history of American music, the songs tracing technological changes and social change, and music’s move from the club to disco as live bands moved aside for DJs. Witness Septimus, on the cusp of both, blending a live drummer with a Roland drum machine and cutting ‘Here I Go Again’ on a 12” single. Separated from the major centers of soul music, Seattle was a scene that developed out of the gaze of the mainstream music industry, but one that moved just as fast. As John Studamire of the band Priceless remembers, “A lot of the groups around town would have to incorporate that disco sound or you’d sound totally dated.” Seattle’s size and location had a great effect on its sound. Artists on the scene were accustomed to playing small, discreetly segregated club shows and pressing short runs of 45s for local radio stations. Touring happened mostly on a regional scale and artists popped up in a variety of different bands. Fans of Volume I will recognize some familiar names here: Robbie Hill’s Family Affair turn in the soul-jazz gem ‘Don’t Give Up’ and Cold, Bold & Together present the undeniable vocal beauty of ’Let’s Backtrack.’ Compiled and sequenced by Seattle’s DJ Supreme La Rock, this 18 track compilation will also introduce you to the long-forgotten blue-eyed soul boy Don Brown (‘Don’t Lose Your Love’) and frustrated talents Push, overlooked for record deals on account of singer “Big Joe” Erickson’s larger-than-life heft (‘You Turn Me On’). There’s Frederick Robinson III and his gospel-funk protest tune ‘Love One Another’, Tony Benton of Teleclere being Seattle’s answer to Prince (‘Steal Your Love’) and Seattle Mariners baseball star Lenny Randle recording a tribute to their infamous stadium. Certainly a different scene up in Seattle that fits into the musical journey perfectly. I confess to knowing only a few of these trackes played out in the Northern modern rooms..Good enjoyable album!

Geno Washington And The Ram Jam Band - Foot Stompin' Soul 2 x CD (2006) Castle - Rare Soul (FLAC 814MB )

Long deleted album for the jumpers and movvers out there or just for those who enjoy listening to good old fashioned soul and dance music delivered by this veteran USA artist who,s been living in the uk now for many years. Geno originates from Evansville in Indiana. Not to be confused with Gino Washington the Detroit Legend... He first came to England in the 1960’s as part of the US Air Force. His love of Blues and Soul music soon found him jamming with local bands in and around Ipswich and eventually led him to London where he caused a sensation singing with top R&B acts Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames and Zoot Money’s Big Roll Band at the legendary Flamingo Club in Soho, along with the wheel manchester one of the first UK venues to host All-Nighters. The rest, as they say is history, a legend with Mods & Northern fans alike. Geno teamed up with some of London’s hottest musicians and Geno Washington and the Ram Jam Band very quickly became established as the most exciting live band in Britain, regularly topping the bill over World famous artistes, as nobody in their right mind wanted to go on stage after a Geno show! Throughout the years Geno and his band have continued to tour extensively all over the World and have released several highly acclaimed albums and singles. He did return to the States in the mid 1970,s and becam a qualified Hypnotist, but came back again to the uk in the 1980,s where he still remains. Geno’s life long love of Blues and R&B has led to yet another chapter in his illustrious career with the formation of “Geno and the Yo Yo’s” which features the longstanding rhythm section of the Ram Jam Band (Geoff Hemsley on drums, Steve Bingham on bass and Greg Lester on guitar) which is a hard- hitting, fast-moving show of R&B / Blues / Soul classics that has audiences on their feet from start to finish and is receiving rave reviews wherever they play.Whether it’s Geno Washington and the Ram Jam Band or Geno Washington and the Yo Yo’s you can be sure of one thing and that is a barnstorming live show that never lets up in intensity or excitement and delivers the goods every time!!2 studio albums recorded and ive seen him about 7 or 8 times now always value for money and one of the best live shows you can ever see! and he still performs at 80 years of age...CD1 is Live CD2 In the Studio. Apologies for poor images my damn scanner is playing up again.

Jerry-O And The Funk Brothers - Rare & Completely Remastered (2023) - Rare Soul (FLAC & MP3 422MB)

Jerry-O also used "Jerrio & Jerree" is forever linked to the Funk Brothers as they were on most of his records & labels when moonlighting form Hitsville. Jerry-O real name Jerry J. Murray, died in the mid 1970s.  He was born in 1939 in St. Louis and moved to Chicago. He was a friend of Gene Chandler when singing with The Dukays and he helped (he was a DJ), promote them locally. He started his own label Jerry O Records and recorded "Jerk/Mo’Jerk" with the Dukays after Gene had left. 1965 Jerry O was in the duo Tom & Jerrio alongside Robert ‘Tommy Dark’ Tharp. "Boo-Ga-Loo b/w Boomerang" (ABC / Paramount) one of many tracks the duo covered, apparently Berry Gordy of Motown claimed the copyright. In 1966 with Sammy Kaplan he started the Boo-Ga-Loo label. Tom & Jerry-O did everything Boo-Gal-loo. Jerry-O had a great rapping style and their records if sometimes monotonous are also infectious. The Funk Brothers along with their work at Motown, collaborated with Samuel Kaplan under different band names as their paycheck at Motown was pitiful back in the day. Names used all in were: The Sea Shells, The Funk Brothers with Jerryo, Mighty Lover Band, and The Soulmates. They also moonlit on most of the other well known Detroit Soul labels far too numerous to mention, but you can spot their sound if an ardent fan. Jerry Jerome Murray “Jerry-O” was elemental in bringing The Funk Brothers to Sammy. They all worked with Sammy’s Lovelane Company, producing several hits in the 1960s and 1970s.The story behind the Seashells is interesting....In a burst of inspiration, Sammy Kaplan and Jesse Greer collaborated on a fresh new track titled “Quiet Home.” Sammy brings in a new rising star he found at the Grande Ballroom in Detroit on stage, the young 21-year-old captivating female vocalist Alyssa Franklin, whose voice would bring the final touch to their masterpiece in 1968, all recorded in Jesse’s living room with Jerry O and the Funk Brothers as the players. For the final edit and mix, Sammy and Jesse produced it, and Engineer Mike Terry arranged the song at United Sound. They christened their ensemble by calling themselves “The Sea Shells,” backed by renowned Lovelane Music and Villige Records. I have tried to research Alyssa but nothing on the web is coming up ? like she,s vanished without trace! ...Ron and Jesse,s "Quiet Home" collaboration is a gorgeous and sexy unveiling of what Alyssa thought when she sang Jesse Greer's words of love and loss....The Funk Brothers are among the most successful group of studio musicians in music history. Some combination of the members played on each of Motown’s 100-plus U.S. R&B number-one singles and 50-plus U.S. Pop number-ones released from 1961 to 1972. Early members included bandleader Joe Hunter and Earl Van Dyke (piano and organ); Clarence Isabell (double bass); James Jamerson (bass guitar and double bass); Benny “Papa Zita” Benjamin and Richard “Pistol” Allen (drums); Mike Terry (baritone saxophone); Paul Riser (trombone); Robert White, Eddie Willis, and Joe Messina (guitar); Jack Ashford (tambourine, percussion, vibraphone, marimba); Jack Brokensha (vibraphone, marimba); and Eddie “Bongo” Brown (percussion),& Richard `Popcorn`Wylie, Piano & Percussion. Hunter left in 1964, replaced on keyboards by Johnny Griffith and as bandleader by Van Dyke. Uriel Jones joined the band as a third drummer. Late-era bassist Bob Babbitt and guitarist Dennis Coffey joined the ensemble in 1966. There is no undisputed list of the group members, as some writers have claimed that virtually every musician who ever played on a Motown track was a “Funk Brother.” However, there are 13 Funk Brothers identified in Paul Justman’s 2002 documentary Standing in the Shadows of Motown, based on Allan Slutsky’s book of the same name. These 13 members were identified by NARAS for the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and recognized with a Hollywood Walk of Fame star. Their Hits are endless. In 2007, the Funk Brothers were inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum. This collection gathers together nearly everything that Jerry-O had a hand in. As for Jerry-O & Tom no stardome for these guys but they left their mark on soul fans.dancers forever!....PLEASE NOTE ALL EMAILS SENT OUT ON JANUARY 1ST.

Spanky Wilson & the Quantic Soul Orchestra - I'm Thankful (2006) Tru Thoughts + Booklet - Rare Soul/Funk (FLAC 250MB)

It was much to soul singer Spanky Wilson's surprise. she didn't realize she had had such an impact when British multi-instrumentalist/producer Will Holland contacted her in her Los Angeles home in 2004, professing his love of her music and wondering if she'd collaborate with him. Still, she agreed to go the studio, and together they did two songs, "Don't Joke with a Hungry Man" and "When You're Through," for Holland's solo project, Quantic, on the album Mishaps Happening. That collaboration worked out so well that they decided to make an entire record together, this time with Holland's full band, the Quantic Soul Orchestra. Wilson's lovely voice is the centerpiece of "I'm Thankful", and it does show a bit of its age, but only in the best of ways, deepening it and giving it an added measure of credibility and authenticity while still preserving its expressiveness and strength. Attesting to Wilson's tremendous ability is the fact that the record is very intimately and sparsely produced, making it seem as if the singer is almost in the room right with the you, the sometimes raspy and breathy line endings audible in that professional, practiced way. The band, which plays J.B.'s -inspired tight funk riffs, occasionally branching into modern jazz horn solos or even wah-wahed guitars, often uses a modern dancefloorish beat (in both versions of "Don't Joke with a Hungry Man," for example, which are different from the Quantic one), which makes sense as Holland is an able electronica producer as well as composer (besides the cover of Bo Diddley's "You Can't Judge a Book by Its Cover," all the pieces on the album are completely written and arranged by him). But the music here is still funk, horns and all, and since the drums are always live, there's still a nice organic sense about it. The neo-soul "That's How It Was," which reflects upon Hurricane Katrina, is touching and affecting, and as Wilson sings, "Now people are talking 'bout a need for a change/Hoping and fighting for power exchange/Thank heavens for life, but not for the pain/Thousands of tears just washed away in that rain," there's a real emotion and tenderness in her voice that comes through clearly and honestly. Because "I'm Thankful" is about clarity and avoiding pretension, it's about rhythm and groove, it's about playing soul music for its own sake, which makes it a very successful album, a great melding of two talented artists and an introduction to Spanky Wilson for many who haven't heard her before, and need to !

Various Artists - Eccentric Soul - The Capsoul Label (2017) Numero Group + Booklet - Rare Soul (FLAC 351MB)

Whilst sorting out my mammoth collection i re-discovered ALL the CD,s on the Eccentric Soul series courtesy of the boys at Numero...what a joy made me one happy man!....Where everything Numero begins this was their very first album issued in 2004 re-issued on CD & VINYL twice now this is the second edition with an extra track. The story goes three guys in a purple Saturn station wagon drove down to Columbus, Ohio, and came back to Chicago with a lost label, the rest is history.... In the early '70s, Bill Moss' Capsoul imprint could barely break wind in the larger music marketplace, and yet today the label's output can stand shoulder to shoulder with any classic soul of its era. Isolated in central Ohio and lacking the funds to back them, groups like the Four Mints and Johnson, Hawkins, Tatum & Durr might've easily withstood ten rounds against the Temptations, Smokey, or Otis. The scrappy Capsoul writing team of Dean Francis, Jeff Smith, and Norman Whiteside would've thrown blow for blow with any Gamble & Huff or Holland/Dozier/Holland thrown at them, so good were they at their craft. From Bill Moss' civil rights meditation "Sock It To 'Em Soul Brother" to Marion Black's future hit about the future "Who Knows" to Kool Blues bounding "I'm Gonna Keep on Loving You," Eccentric Soul: The Capsoul Label remains £ for $ one of the best soul compilations of its century......How does a record become a hit? As history has shown, for every chart topper, there are easily 10 equally well made and compelling songs which never become widely known. My case in point is this album, documents the tiny Columbus, Ohio label's output during the 1970s. The selections included here are closer to the gritty sounds of Stax than to the high polished Motown soul, but the musicianship and performances would not sound out of place next to the same era's familiar classics from Memphis and Detroit. The Kool Blues "I'm Gonna Keep On Loving You" apes Sam & Dave's back and forth vocal approach, while Four Tops style harmonies are the template for the Four Mints "Too Far Gone" and "'Row My Boat". This collection is an unexpected surprise for the adventurous soul lover looking to discover something new from the old days. And if thats not enough a second volume namely "Capitol City Soul" will be reviewed returning to Bill Moss,s empire in Ohio to showcase completely unissued and underissued treasures, so more great tracks to look forward too!.Surperb Soul & dancers on both of these great albums. Mu only complaint is their poor artwork it really is poor.

Wheedle's Groove - Kearney Barton (2009) Light In The Attic - Rare Soul/Funk/Gospel/Jazz (FLAC 239MB)

Imagine Early Kool & The Gang jamming with the MG,s & Tower Of Power.....This is advanced funk making a mockery of its age, years ahead of its time and would break today if exposed, Such a cool album!....Seattle Funk & Soul in superbly classic form, polished and delivered on a soulful plate!!  Featuring a roster of first wave Seattle scene figures and engineered by the the legendary Kearney Barton recording engineer with over 50 years in the business in North West America! All of these cuts were recorded in 2008 at Audio Recording, where it all went down in the first place, (thats the place on the front cover) as chronicled on yesterdays excellent "Wheedle's Groove" compilation. This set features many of the players from the mid 1960s through early 1970s Emerald City ( Seattle) music scene, working as an all star band on funky originals and covers! Presumably doubling up as the house band. It's incredible stuff, from the Hammond B3 & Moog funk instrumental "Babyback", to a gospel funk take on "Jesus Christ Pose" featuring Pastor Pat Wright (AKA Northern Soul legend Patrinell Staten) and the Total Experience Gospel Choir, to the gritty soul of "HOE" featuring Ural Thomas on vocals and backing by the Muscle Shoals Horns no less, a spacey keyboard workout on Marc Moulin's "Humpty Dumpty" thats so infectious and much more. Producer Dynomite D does a wonderful job of putting the pieces together, and the players include members of Black On White Affair, Cookin' Bag, Cold Bold and Together, with Overton Berry on piano, keyboard maestros Ron Buford and Greg Davison, drummers Robbie Hill and John Lee Rodde, vocalists Ural Thomas and Broham (Larry Hammond, Leonard Hammond & Curtis Hammond Jr), guitarists Johnny Horn, Herman Brown and Coleman Brown, bass player Bob Lovelace and others. This like the sextones yesterday is a breath of fresh air to my ears anyway!....Dont cha just love music ?

The Sextones - Love Can't Be Borrowed (2023) Record Kicks - New Soul (FLAC 193MB)

Thanks to Anton for requesting this gem, again another album lost in my memory though i do remember buying it earlier in the year on this italian import after hearing a few tracks on a soul show.....After summers spent packing showrooms across Europe and the U.S., bringing their mix of meticulous songcrafting and electrifying stage presence to the forefront of the soul scene, The Sextones are back with this new 2nd album which i think is better than their debut will post thst later. The intrepid soul crusaders from Nevada’s high desert have emerged from both a period of pandemic introspection and a years long writing and recording process guided by virtuoso producer Kelly Finnigan (Monophonics) with their latest offering.Sophisticated, suave, and masterfully composed, the album is a sonic love letter to late 60s and early 70s soul, nodding to the giants of the genre and bowing to its unsung heroes. Drawing from their upbringings steeped in the sound, frontman and guitarist Mark Sexton who has a fantastic voice and bassist Alexander Korostinsky knew they wanted an album to highlight their old school sound while leaving room for innovation. They found that balance in marathon recording sessions at Finnigan’s Transistor Sound studio in San Rafael, California. Over the course of two years, the producer helped them break down their slate of songs to the bare essentials and add a new layer of sonic maturity. With inspiration from artists & their heroes like The Moments, Baby Huey, The Delfonics, and especially the late Curtis Mayfield, the album is drenched in the era -defining tone that can only come fromthe influesnce of the "old guard" as mentioned. The Sextones’ new album sounds like opening a time capsule from the golden era of American soul, assuring crate-diggers and casual fans alike that the legacy of the genre’s past 50 years is in capable hands. If you like your soul this will blow you away!..Great to still see new bands keeping the old soul sound alive!

Spanky Wilson - The Westbound Years (2007) Westbound + Booklet - Rare Soul/Funk (FLAC 404MB)

Ms Wilson's musical roots stretch back to late 1960s Los Angeles where she was discovered by legendary producer and arranger H.B. Barnum. Barnum signed her to his Mothers record label, where she recorded three sought after albums. In the early 1970s she signed to the Westbound label in Detroit, where she recorded the fantastic album "Specialty Of The House" and a bunch of unreleased recordings, which are all gathered on this superb ( and i mean Superb) release which is long deleted. Few good dancers that received attention included on the you-know-where-scene but its such a beautifully well delivered album that showcases this lady,s immense talents across the board. This is a side of her i,m more interested in than her jazz style. Her album with the Quantic Orchestra will be reviewed soon also by request. To clarify Westbound Records UK is a subsiduary of Ace records in London as is kent. Armen Boladian was already a long-time fixture on the Detroit music scene when he launched Westbound. Since the late 1980s Ace has been Westbound’s/Eastbound,s European licensee and have diligently mined their vaults. All the big name artists have their albums available, in the case of both Funkadelic and the Ohio Players, in expanded editions. while they have also issued a variety of obscure recordings from the edges of the catalogue which appeal to the specialist fan. If you want obscure funk, or Northern Soul you will find compilations that will suit your tastes as i gobbled up most of them over the years. Read the booklet for more info.

Various Artists - Wheedle's Groove - Seattle's Finest in Funk & Soul 1965-75 (2004) - Light In The Attic - Rare Soul & Funk (FLAC 366MB)

The name Wheedle’s Groove is named after the official mascot of the the Seattle supersonics Basketball Team. Each track on this compilation is an untold musical history lesson of seattle,s Black Music scene tucked away in the north west of the USA. It’s one of those things where you kind of had to be there, to get the full effect of what Seattle was like in the late ‘60s and early ’70s, like anywhere else. Seattle had a history rich in music with their most famous son being Jimi Hendrix. Back then, petrol cost you 27 cents a gallon in that city to fill up your car. There was no Seahawks (gridiron football), no Mariners (baseball), or Microsoft or Amazon. Girls were still named Frances and Darlene being the most popular in that city, and guys were known by Freddie and Arthur again most popular names. Garfield and Franklin were the leading high schools for setting Seattle’s soulful social standards. Dick’s and Dag’s were the spots for twenty-nine-cent burgers, while Helen’s Diner was (and still is) known for the best soul food on the West Coast. TJ’s and Mr. D’s were the clothing stores where most of the brothers shopped, and the CD, the Central District, was (and still is) the heart and soul of the city. There was a minimum of twenty live music clubs specializing in funk and soul, and all those joints were jumpin & jammed Packed, again similar to the UK back then. There was circa 25 live bands playing four sets a night from 8 pm till the wee small hours of the morning. Each night, some band, somewhere, was kickin’ it if you loved your soul music, not like the UK back then when were were starved of clubs & artists till the onset of the late 1960,s ?early 1970,s.. This is the first of 3 albums coming to highlight the black music scene in seattle also famous for its coffee! The CD is short of 3 tracks that were issued on the double LP , so ive ripped the CD for better sound and also included the 3 LP tracks so you guys dont miss out, 3 LP tracks listed under Back Cover.

Johnny Lytle - The Loop & New And Groovy (1990) BGP - Rare 60,s Jazz/Boogaloo (FLAC 427MB)

Vibes player Johnny Lytle was one of the heroes of the early acid jazz club circuit, with his cuts ‘Selim’ and ‘The Man’ being anthems of the scene. The Ohio born player’s first album, as a leader was on the Jazzland label in 1962 with “Nice And Easy” and his second, three years later, on Riverside “The Village Caller” made him a star in the jazz world. When Riverside encountered difficulties, co-owner Orrin Keepnews collaborated with Lytle on two albums which came out on the Detroit label Tuba in 1966 & 1967. He cut 21 studio albums in total and the man,s sound is timeless & still popular in all genres of black music clubs. This is an UPGRADE as posted on the old blog in mp3. The "snapper" & "Selim" gained plays on the Northern/Mod Scene,s to note. If anyone has the booklet i wouldnt say no please & Thanks.
