Richard Barbary - Soul Machine (1968) A&M/CTI - LP Only Release - Rare Soul + Bonus Tracks (FLAC HR)

Now this is another Holy Grail i totally forgot i had till i was contacted by my good pal Yves, so thanks for the reminder yves and found it after a 3 hour search!...Richard is a huge mystery as there,s nothing out there info wise on him?..But the album is a strange release for CTI as it concentrated on jazz releases. Only Richards album & Tamiko Jones album fell into the soul catergory. But what a fantastic album it is, look at who,s involved in the credits many soul legends were involved in this project. Back in the day a northern jock introduced the 2 great dancers to the scene off the album, so i had to include his stunning twofer on Spring as bonus tracks as well. What happened to him god only knows but with a voice like his he could have been a superstar if the dice had tumbled the right way.. Just this one studio album recorded and a few 45,s is all he did...shame. No tasters on youtube for the 2 standout tracks apart from nature boy & the entire album so i,ll include the bonus tracks instead. Take my word for it the whole album is a joy! Bonus tracks listed under credits.

Creative Source - Creative Source (1973) Sussex - LP Version - Rare Soul/Funk (FLAC-HR)

One of my fave groups of all time who only recorded 4 studio albums this being their debut. The Los Angeles based quintet seemingly appeared out of nowhere in the early '70s to score with a funky  rendition of Bill Withers' "Who Is He (And What Is He to You) on this album and breathtakingly brilliant  IMHO   had the same effect on me like the temptations " Papa Was A Rolling Sotne"!..The group, comprised of Barbara Berryman, Barbara Lewis, Don Wyatt, Steve Flanagan (known to northern fans for his 3 superb dancers), and Celeste Rose, was managed by Fifth Dimensions' Ron Townsend and two of the members were seasoned vets. Lewis sang with the Los Angeles Elgins(not Motown) on their Lummtone recordings, while Wyatt performed with a pair of late-'50s groups (the Fortunes and the Colts) and also sang in Nat "King" Cole's background group for a spell. Mike Stokes produced this their first and most successful album, being label mates and fans of bill withers its no surprised they recorded a few of his songs over their albums. The Migration album followed later in 1974, but failed to spawn anything major despite Skip Scarborough's exquisite vocal arrangements. Creative Source's other significant singles were "You Can't Hide Love" (the Earth, Wind & Fire ditty), "You're Too Good to Be True," and "I Just Can't See Myself Without You." Wrongly labeled by many as strictly disco and funk, Creative Source could mellow out with the best of them, such as Withers' "Let Me in Your Life," a floating beauty, and "You're Too Good to Be True," where the male lead sounds like a cross between Tyrone Davis and Jerry Butler. Polydor issued their final two albums (Pass the Feelin' On and Consider the Source), which were as compelling as the Sussex productions, but a lack of promotion and public indifference caused them both to fizzle. With little backing and no label after Polydor, Creative Source drifted back into basic Southern California nine-to-five living and disappered from the industry. Many of their tracks were huge on the northern scene and soul/jazz/funk clubs such was their versatilty and talent. What a stunning album to make your debut with!

Gregg Diamond - Gregg Diamond's Star Cruiser - LP (1978) Marlin - CD (2021) Solid Japan + Bonus Tracks - Rare Soul/Funk/Disco (FLAC)

Greg Diamond was born in 1949 & passed 1999. He was a pianist, drummer, songwriter, and producer who was active in the Jazz and Disco music scenes of the 1970s.Also he worked extensively with Luther Vandross,Chaka Khan & James Brown. Whilst this album was aimed at the Disco market at the time it surprisingly crossed over & provided a few huge dancers on the northern scene as well as mainstream soul/funk clubs here in the UK. Greg recorded 3 more albums for polydor as well as 20 odd singles. Henry Stone of miami was a shrewed cookie and could spot a lot of money coming his way through the sales of this album on his Marlin label which he of course did.

Charles Jackson - Passionate Breezes (1978) Capitol LP - Rare Soul (MP3)

For a time in the late 70s Charles “Chuck” Jackson was a hot soul property and tipped for great things. Born in South Carolina in 1945, Jackson got into the music business when he joined Jerry Butler’s famous Chicago writers workshop. There he met up with another aspiring song smith, Marvin Yancy, and the pair promptly established a four piece vocal group as a vehicle for their songs. That group, The Independents, enjoyed some success before surprisingly folding and the Jackson/Yancy team went back to song writing eventually striking gold when they teamed up with Capitol star Natalie Cole for ‘This Will Be’. Capitol was so impressed with that song (and several others) that they signed Jackson as an artist and they had him record two albums. 1978’s ‘Passionate Breezes’ was produced by Yancy and the veteran, Gene Barge and the set is best and rightly remembered for the title song. ‘Passionate Breezes’ is a classic Quiet Storm ballad… indeed it helped define the genre and it still sounds great today. Testament to its beauty is the fact the Dells (who knew a thing or two about decent ballads) cut a version of it too. Other highlights include a medley of Jackson’s own ‘I’m In Heaven’ with Billy Preston’s ‘You Are So Beautiful’. Surprisingly considering Jackson was such an acclaimed writer there’s also a cover of Rod Stewart’s ‘Tonight’s The Night’… odd, but odder is the fact that on the follow up LP, ‘Gonna Getcha Love’ (On the Review list) there’s only one Charles Jackson song, the gently insinuating ‘I Really Want You’. Jackson faded as an artist and went back to writing achieving notable success with songs he pitched at Whitney Houston. Apparently he now lives in comfortable retirement in Los Angeles… yep, those royalties sure provide a decent pension pot!..This album is as soulful as it gets...classy!

Various Artists - Motown Salutes Bacharach (2002) Universal/Motown - Soul/MOR (MP3)

Motown always had an eye on the lucrative cabaret market and most of their top acts recorded a few lushly scored standards amongst the more teen dance oriented fare. For this collection of previously available material, Universal has swept through the Motown back catalogue and come up with 18 Burt Bacharach compositions. The album kicks off with Gladys Knight's version of The Look Of Love, first recorded by Dionne Warwick, as with so many Bacharach songs, but best known by Dusty Springfield from the film Casino Royale. It ends with Stephanie Mills' 1975 funky revival of This Empty Place, my personal fave on the album. Most of the selections are readily available, but a few are not in print elsewhere, such as the Marvelettes' great rendition of Message To Michael. In most other cases, the songs are the stars, rather than the artists, and one can only marvel again at the talents of the songwriters whether you dig " middle of the road" type of music or not. Stevie Wonder's instrumental versions of Alfie and A House Is Not A Home are rather schmaltzy, but the least effective recording on this album is Do You Know The Way To San José, culled from a live TV special. It takes the combined forces of the Supremes and the Temptations to provide a snatch of the song which fizzles out after barely one minute.
This is Motown in a tuxedo, not at its best but a fascinating stroll down its side roads.

The Trammps - Trammps - LP (1975) Golden Fleece - CD + Bonus Tracks (2002) Epic Legacy - Rare Soul (FLAC)

This is the album that got them on their way and what a debut it is! The Trammps legends to all soul fans and popular in all black music clubs down the years.  They were formed by Earl Young and Jimmy Ellis in 1972 in Philadelphia, two former members of the Volcanos (and were also called The Cardells in the late 1950,s, who had some local success with their singles, 'Storm Warning' b/w 'Baby', 'Make Your Move' b/w 'Baby', and 'You're Number One' b/w 'Make Your Move'.  The group recorded for the Arctic, Harthon and Virtue labels. They became known as the Body Motions for a while, with the line-up comprising Gene Jones, Steve Kelly, John Hart, Stanley Wade, Harold Wade and Earl Young. The group were later joined by Dennis Harris (guitar), Ron Kersey (keyboards), John Hart (organ), Stanley Wade (bass) and Michael Thompson (drums), taking their name from a tease that 'all (they would) ever be were tramps!... They gained a reputation covering old standards, of which 'Zing Went The Strings Of My Heart' b/w 'Penguin At The Big Apple' (in 1972 on Buddah Records) was a minor hit, but all the uptempo aformentioned records were picked up bu the UK northern soul scene. The song was a remake of a tune originally recorded by Judy Garland in 1943. They released the album of the same name, which featured a follow up single, 'Sixty Minute Man'. The ensemble then set up their own lebel, Golden Fleece, and had a major U.K. hit, in 1975, with the song 'Hold Back The Night', which reached number 40 on the pop charts and 10 on the R&B charts after demo copies were palyed on the northern scene.
Another hit 'Where Do We Go From Here', reached number 44 on the R & B charts in 1974. By 1976, the group had relocated to the Atlantic label where, 'Where the Happy People Go' was to become their biggest pop hit to date, reaching 27 in the charts. Further hits on Atlantic included, 'Disco Party', 'Body Contact', 'I Fell Like I've Been Livin' (On The Dark Side Of The Moon)', 'The Night The Lights Went Out', and 'Soul Bones' (which featured a harmonica solo by Stevie Wonder). In 1978 , their song 'Disco Inferno', was featured in the film 'Saturday Night Fever', a tune which became one of the major hits of the Disco era. The song went on to be one the industries biggest selling albums to date, resulting in the group winning a Grammy Award in 1979 and world wide fame. By this time, the Trammps had added to their numbers, with Earl Young and Jimmy Ellis, remaining at the helm, alongside brothers Stan and Harold 'Doc' Wade and baritone Robert Upchurch. Following the Disco boom, the bust which followed took it's toll on the group's success. The group remained a unit until 1980 at which time they disbanded and embarked on solo careers. In the new millennium the Trammps continued to tour, at times in the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia and South America. Now in semi retirement the new line up comes out now and again for small gigs. They recorded 10 studio albums and 80+ singles. Who doesnt like something recorded by the Trammps or Volcanos ?

Experience Unlimited - Free Yourself - LP (1977) Black Fire - CD (2002) P-Vine Japan - Rare Funk/Soul/Jazz

This was the debut album from the band who formed in the '70s and originally had a sound inspired by the likes of early Earth, Wind & Fire, Santana, and War. They developed into one of Washington, D.C.'s original and longest lasting acts. They enjoyed their height of popularity in the 1980s and early 1990s.  Fronted by lead singer/bassist Gregory "Sugar Bear" Elliot, the group has had a fluctuating membership over the years, but they have maintained a fairly loyal following. To date they have banged out 11 studio albums and 30 odd singles. This still fetches big bucks for collectors on the hunt. brilliant heavy raw funk!

R.I.P. Chuck Jackson Born 1937 Passed Feb 2023 - A Tribute To A King - Chuck Jackson - Any Day Now + Encore! (Bonus Track Version - 4 xtra Tracks) (2015) Soul Jam + Booklet - Rare Soul (FLAC)

I learned a few days ago of another sad passing of one of the giants of R&B/Soul music..Here is a great twofer from 2 of his best ever albums i often dig out and play as my humble tribute to a great man! One of the most influential singers of the 1960s. One of traditional R&B music's legendary proponents, Chuck Jackson racked up an impressive twenty three charted singles between 1961 and 1980. The soul man with the dashing good looks and the distinctive smooth yet soulful vocal style was certainly a hitmaking mainstay from the time "I Don't Want To Cry" climbed to No. 5 on the R&B charts and No. 36 on the Hot 100 in the spring of 1961. Born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and raised in Latta,South Carolina His brother also went onto fame in the church and politics Rev Jesse Jackson. Jackson was already a seasoned performer by the time he joined the stable of Wand Records, a second label started by former New Jersey housewife Florence Greenberg, owner and founder of Scepter Records, itself one of the most successful independent companies of the '60s and recording home to such artists as Dionne Warwick, The Shirelles and B.J. Thomas. Chuck began his musical journey singing in church before in his own words  "running away to Pittsburgh!" He returned to South Carolina to attend college after which he joined the Raymond Raspberry Gospel Singers, getting his first taste of touring on the nation's gospel circuit. In 1957, Chuck was offered the chance to join the popular interracial singing group, The Dell-Vikings. While he was not on the group's major hit singles, he did experience life on the road: a conversation with the late Jackie Wilson led Chuck to strike out on his own. He recorded singles for a number of labels without any success but hooking up with Wilson proved fortuitous, performing as a part of the hugely popular singer's revue gave Jackson a chance to be seen and heard by audiences at such theaters as The Regal in Chicago, the Uptown in Philadelphia, the Howard in Washington DC and of course, The Apollo in New York. It was at the famed Harlem venue that Chuck got his big break when Scepter owner Greenberg and her A&R man Luther Dixon saw him perform during Jackie Wilson's show. Other labels such as Brunswick (Wilson's longtime recording home), RCA and Columbia had shown interest but Jackson decided to go with Scepter, becoming one of the first artists on Wand. In a 2004 phone interview, he recalled that "there was a real family atmosphere there. Everyone knew each other..." Chuck quickly established himself as one of Wand's keystone artists, after his initial success with "I Don't Want To Cry," he continued his chart run with the beautiful "I Wake Up Crying," apparently the first song written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David to be done for Scepter/Wand. Bacharach was also responsible for co-writing (with collaborator Bob Hilliard) the perennial "Any Day Now (My Wild Beautiful Bird)" which would become Chuck Jackson's all-time biggest hit, reaching No. 2 on the R&B charts and No. 23 on the pop listings. Recording some ten albums for Wand, including 1965's popular "Mr. Everything" which included a version of Bacharach & David's "I Just Don't Know What To With Myself" (originally recorded by Wand labelmate Tommy Hunt), Chuck's name continued to appear on marquees as a nationwide headliner even though his success as a recording artist had its highs & lows. The excellent "I Keep Forgettin,'" written by the famed team of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller (the men behind many of the hits by The Coasters and The Drifters, and of course, Elvis Presley) didn't make any chart impression but "Tell Him I'm Not Home," with Doris Troy of "Just One Look" fame offering the female vocal part on the song, did. The song became Chuck's last Top 20 R&B hit until he was teamed with Wand's other main R&B hitmaker, Maxine Brown to cover "Something You Got," another Leiber-Stoller tune previously cut by New Orleans' singer Alvin Robinson. In between, there was a flurry of singles, such as a cover of southern soul man William Bell's "Any Other Way" but nothing took hold like the duet with Brown. The result was a Top 10 R&B hit on 1965, two more charted singles and two albums together. But Chuck's association with Wand was nearing its end: "I had a longstanding relationship with Berry Gordy and his family even before he started Motown. Smokey Robinson, with whom I toured a lot, was trying to get me on the label for years," Chuck stated in a February 2004 conversation. "Florence Greenberg and I got into an argument on the phone after she refused to pay for my musicians to perform with me at a disc jockey convention. She told me if I didn't like it, I could leave but that it would cost me. I asked her how much! Then I called Smokey and I told him if he wanted me on Motown, I was ready but I needed help getting the money to buy my contract from Wand. Three days later, I walked into Florence's office with a check. She took it but she was in tears. She really didn't want me to go..." Unfortunately, Chuck's three years with Motown did not restore him to chart-topping status. Jackson said in 2004: "The first thing Motown did was put me on the road with The Supremes. Then I went out with The Four Tops. I spent most of the time with Motown touring. I recorded two albums but I was basically 'cold' apart from doing "Are You Lonely For Me Baby." There's a funny story behind that: when I first joined Wand, I was walking into the offices at 1650 Broadway and this guy stopped me. He told me, 'I'm a big fan of yours and I have a song for you.' I explained that I didn't really pick my own material, that Luther Dixon did. I let Luther hear it but he said we already had songs ready for the next album so the guy, Freddie Scott,  took the song, did it himself a few years later and had a big hit with it. When I got to Motown, I asked them if I could record the song..." A short stop at ABC in 1973 did not provide a reversal of fortunes for the soul man. He spent a few years with the New Jersey based All Platinum Records working with the label's mainstay group The Moments, label owner Joe Robinson's wife Sylvia (of "Pillow Talk" fame) and Philadelphia artist/producer/songwriter Bunny Sigler and came through with one hit, "I'm Needing You, Wanting You" in 1975. "Joe and Sylvia were my neighbors in New Jersey at the time and I recorded a lot for the company but not much of it was released," Chuck recalled. His last 'major' label stop was with EMI in 1980: "I got with EMI through Don Taylor, who worked with Bob Marley. Don started out years before as my valet...and established himself in the business. Once I got with the label, Don took me and my old Wand producer Luther Dixon to Jamaica to Bob's studio and I recorded "I Wanna Give You Some Love" there. Since its release, Chuck Jackson has kept himself busy, performing and touring on a consistent basis. On the board of The Rhythm & Blues Foundation, Chuck Jackson also produced special events shows at New York's Apollo Theater where he jumpstarted his solo career several decades ago. He was inducted into the Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame in 2015. His multiple uptempo dancers didnt go unoticed by the UK northern scene hence the superb releases on Kent. Its been a tough last 12 months in the amount of great artists that have passed but what a wonderful legacy he and they have left us with...We,ll never forget you Chuck...

Pastor T.L. Barrett And The Youth For Christ Choir - Like A Ship (Without A Sail) LP (1971) Mt Zion Gospel - CD (2010) Light In The Attic - Rare Gospel/Soul (FLAC)

This is a wonderful holy grail album that will appeal to Gospel & Soul Fans alike!..just check out the tasters!....Pastor T.L. Barrett led a youth choir out of Chicago during the late '60s and early '70s, just a few years after he got on the straight and narrow path, which may help listeners understand the unique power of the material on "Like a Ship"(Without a Sail).  Self-released by Barrett in 1971, it communicates many things, foremost being adoration and praise and, on the title track, the lost, aimless feelings that were undoubtedly shared by many a youth in the late '60s. Barrett got help on arrangements from some of Chicago's best studio hands, Chess/Cadet maestro Gene Barge, bassists Phillip Upchurch and Richard Evans, and drummer Charles Pittman. The opening title track is a moving piece of progressive soul, closer to Rotary Connection than Edwin Hawkins with Barrett's vocals evoking Stevie Wonder singing in the style of Donny Hathaway, and the choir is powerful and recorded well. A gem of contemporary gospel, much more obscure (at least outside of Chicago) than it deserved to be. "Joyful Noise" & "Ever Since" went big back in the day on the northern scene.
