Various Artists - Hy Weiss Presents Old Town Records (2003 + Booklet) 2 x CD Ace - Rare Blues/R&B/Soul (FLAC 1.02GB)

Hyman Y. "Hy" Weiss was born in 1923 & passed in 2007. He was an American record producer of pop and rhythm and blues music in the 1950s and 1960s, and the founder of Old Town Records that soul/R&B fans & collectors know so very well. Born to a Jewish family in Cuca, Argeș County, Romania, he was an immigrant to the United States as a baby in 1924 and was brought up in the Bronx, New York. There, he established a friendship with Morris Levy who owned Roulette Records, a pair of street wise New York Businessmen. He served in the US Army Air Force in World War II, before working briefly as a bouncer and as a furrier. He started in the music industry as a record salesman, and set up Parody Records with his brother Sam in 1949. His record label, Old Town Records, was established in August 1953 and was active until 1966. Weiss took sole control of the label in 1956. He was primarily a producer of doo wop groups, as well as blues music. Old Town had its first hit with the 1958 single "We Belong Together" by Robert & Johnny, and had further hits by Billy Bland, the Solitaires, the Capris, the Earls, and others. The Old Town catalog was sold by Weiss to Atlantic Records in 1970. Subsequently, Weiss worked for Stax Records. He had a co-writer credit for the song "Foggy Notion" by the Velvet Underground, along with all the members of the band. Weiss revived Old Town as a vehicle for Arthur Prysock in 1973 and kept the label going until about 1978. Weiss was described as one of the most colorful characters of the New York independent record business and as brash, miserable and explosive in equal measure. He had a bulging contacts book and was both courted and feared in an industry notoriously not for the faint hearted. He was associated with the practice of "payola", being credited as the inventor of the "$50 handshake", and once said: "Why waste time going out with someone you don't like, and sit down and feast with them when you can't stand them? Just give them the money and let them play the  f-----g record!..Tough man but what a legacy he left behind him!..The booklet is a fantastic read guys from a great Double Album!..Tasters all northern..

Kent 332 - VA - Westbound Detroit Northern Soul (2010 + Booklet) - Rare Soul (FLAC 548MB)

UPGRADE from the old blog...Second only to Motown in terms of releases and hits in 60s and 70s Detroit, Westbound and its sister label Eastbound hit on a successful formula of cutting rhythm tracks at Willie Mitchell’s studios in Memphis, while adding strings and backing vocals in Detroit. This was mainly employed on the Detroit Emeralds and Denise LaSalle, other hit acts like Funkadelic and the Fantastic Four were recorded in Detroit as were the many smaller acts. With Motown’s acquisition and decommissioning of the Golden World stable of labels in 1967 and the demise of indies like Thelma and MAH’s, there was a lot of talent in the city with few recording outlets. It was in fact one of the old school Detroit soul producers, Mike Hanks, who persuaded record distributor Armen Boladian to try his hand with a new label. Many od these tracks had probably never made it to vinyl, though there is a possibility Joe Matthews’ may have been on a test pressing or demo that has never turned up. That gives this release more importance because these are very good tracks from important local artists, that virtually nobody will have previously heard as are others featured here. Though Funkadelic were one of the company’s biggest acts, their`s and their followers’ brand of off the wall soul/funk aren’t really cut out for this compilation, with the notable exception of their fine version of the old Golden World classic ‘Can’t Shake It Loose’. Denise LaSalle was a big success but pretty much did her own thing, with her Crajon Productions which came out on other labels, only her own recordings came out on Westbound. The Eastbound subsidiary was originally jazz based and surprisingly two of the stand out 70s soul tracks are provided by ex-Lou Donaldson sidemen Melvin Sparks and Caesar Frazier. The most influential act was the Detroit Emeralds who had a string of hits and also brought talent to the label and produced and wrote for others. only one of their tracks on here as they are covered well on kent`s other Westbound CDs and their lilting mid-tempo sound did not particularly fit into that Northern soul ethos. Their protégé Damon Shawn came up with the first version of ‘Feel The Need In Me’ and the one that got the UK DJ plays. His other track on here, also written by the Emeralds’ lead singer Abe Tilmon Jr, ‘Love Love Love’ (not the Bobby Hebb track) is a splendid number with a big orchestral production that should have done much better. There is a different take on the Detroit Emeralds’ ‘I Can’t See Myself Doing Without You’ by the very unknown Bob & Harold, another case of a discography entry without a disc! Similarly the Magictones reading of ‘Till You Decide To Come Home’ is tougher than the Emeralds’ hit version. Best of all however is a master tape of Abe and Denise LaSalle on an unknown groovy duet called ‘Ain’t That Lovin’’. It would surely have launched a new career for the two 70s soul superstars given the chance. I think kent purposely tried to avoid tracks from their sister label Westbound CD “The Westbound Sound Of Detroit” CDSEWD 065, which was all vocal groups, but they have picked the best five tracks on there and still managed to find nine new group performances, including a good unissued Magictones and two fabulous slow burners from the New Holidays and the Houston Outlaws. The former’s ‘Maybe So, Maybe No’ had been revived recently by Nu Soul act Mayer Hawthorne at time of release, but IMHO the original’s still the best...great booklet as usual from kent and a fantastic album to boot!

Joe Tex - The Collection (2008) Music Mania - Rare Soul (FLAC 372MB)

And more from the great man from Texas!....Joe’s recordings in the Shoals area, Memphis, Miami and Nashville and their sessions seldom produced soul music of anything less than the highest quality. It’s ironic that Joe will always be best remembered by the UK public as the creator and performer of ‘Ain’t Gonna Bump No More (With No Big Fat Woman)’ but, if truth be told, it’s still a classic Joe Tex story song, albeit set to a disco beat. Many of the greatest moments in southern soul occur in Joe’s classic Dial 45s and album tracks. His consistency is almost unparalleled among his peers in what is a very small group of 1960s black American singers who also wrote their own songs. No matter how many times one might play Joe’s very best recordings, there always seems to be something new to enjoy in them and that is truly the mark of greatness as far as I’m concerned. It’s incredible to think that Joe has been gone for more than 40 years. Happily, his recorded legacy will always be there to remind us and future generations of his greatness.

Various Artists - Good All Over - Rare Soul From The Westbound Records Vaults 1969-1975 (2014) Westbound - (MP3 177MB)

"Good All Over” is a selection of rare soul sides culled from Westbound’s & Eastbounds vaults and is the companion to the Kent CD “Westbound Detroit Northern Soul” posted on the old blog in mp3 but will rip it tomorrow given time to flac.... It brings together a strong cross section of performers with a long association with Westbound. Some are among the most recognisable names in 1970s soul, others will be known to very few. But all played their part in making Westbound one of the most musically consistent labels of its time as you will hear. The compilation spans the first six years of the company’s 10-year existence and includes many hard-to-find releases, plus a generous number of tracks that have not been available on CD before. Among those featured are early signings the Magictones, Emanuel Lasky and the Detroit Emeralds. A.C. Tilmon of the Detroit Emeralds is also featured on two solo sides, plus a hitherto unreleased duet with Westbound’s first lady, Denise LaSalle. You will also hear from several artists who worked closely with Tilmon, such as the Motivations and Damon Shawn, along with the Fantastic Four, who were signed to Westbound for longer than any other act and still with the label when it closed for business in 1979.  “Good All Over” does not feature every major Westbound artist but you wouldn’t really expect the hard funk of the Ohio Players or the heavy funk of Funkadelic on a CD devoted to straight-ahead soul. What it does contain is plenty of great music from the most significant and consistently successful record company to operate in Detroit after Motown upped sticks and relocated to the West Coast....Great sweet/deep Detroit soul yet again...what a city it was!

Various Artists - Ric Tic Records - The Discography (2024) - Rare Soul (MP3 566MB)

Ric-Tic Records was set up in the 1960s in Detroit, Michigan by Joanne Bratton and Ed Wingate. Twinned with the Golden World label, Ric-Tic featured many soul music artists and was seen as an early competitor for fellow Detroit label Motown. Motown's owner, Berry Gordy was unhappy with the success of Ric-Tic and in 1968 paid $1 million for the signature of many of the label's artists, the building & Studios, publishing rights in fact all connected with that label. In 2003, it was established that Ric-Tic was named for the deceased son of co-founder Bratton and her then husband, boxer Johnny Bratton. The boy, named Derek and known to his family as Ricky, Ric, or Ric-Tic, died at the age of 11 in 1962. Many early recordings on the Ric-Tic label by artists such as Freddie Gorman, Edwin Starr, and J. J. Barnes were re-released in the 1970s by Motown to coincide with the popularity of the Northern Soul Scene in the UK. The group The Fantastic Four were also signed to Ric-Tic, and became the label's best selling act, outselling Edwin Starr in the United States. Much like Starr, they continued to record under Motown when Ric-Tic was absorbed by the record company. The Detroit Emeralds (having just moved to Detroit and added the word "Detroit" to their group name) recorded briefly for Ric-Tic, achieving their first R&B Chart success with "Show Time", in 1967. They then joined Westbound Records in 1970 & the rest is history. As previously stated, without the records these Detroit labels recorded their would have been no Northern Scene as the rest of the USA soul labels, both majors & small indies followed suit in the style of the upbeat records produced.

Kent 114 - Joe Tex - Skinny Legs & All - The Classic Early Dial Sides (1994 + Booklet) - Rare Soul (FLAC 785MB)

Joe Tex was born Joseph Arrington, Jr. on August 8, 1933 in Rogers, Texas Joe played baritone saxophone at George Washington Carver High School and sang in his church choir at McGowen Cogic Temple in Baytown.  Tex frequently entered Houston area talent shows and in one instance won $300 and a trip to New York in 1953. This trip allowed him to perform as an amateur at the Apollo Theatre, winning first place over other future greats such as Johnny Nash and Hubert Laws. Talent scout and future manager Henry Glover saw Tex there. Tex did not sign right away with Glover, however as his mother wanted him to finish high school first. Joe waited for a year, and through Glover, signed with King Records at the age of 19...Joe recorded under the King Records label from 1955 to 1957 with little success. However, it was there that Tex’s rivalry with Fellow King Records artist James Brown began. In 1958, Tex signed with Ace recording studios (US not UK) and began to perfect his trademark microphone tricks and dance moves. It was these dance moves and tricks that many claim James Brown stole from Tex. He was credited with one important innovation in soul music, the spoken “soul preaching” style which he called “rap” and which would be imitated by Isaac Hayes, Barry White, and Millie Jackson among others. Joe opened for artists such as Jackie Wilson and Little Richard while with Ace until 1960. He then recorded with Dial Records from 1960 to 1964. In 1964 he found a recording home and garnered his first hit, “Hold On To What You’ve Got” (1965) at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Ironically Tex did not feel the song would do well and actually tried to stop its release, but the studio went against his wishes and it sold more than a million copies by 1966. Joe continued recording hits until 1972, when he decided to pursue life as a minister in the Nation of Islam after converting in 1966. He came back to music after the death of the Nation’s leader, Elijah Muhammad in 1975. His last public appearance was in 1981. After that, Tex retreated from the public eye and retired to his ranch in Navasota, Texas with his wife. When Tex converted to Islam, he changed his name to Yusef Hazziez. He had five children. Joe passed at his home in Navasota, Texas from a heart attack on August 13, 1982.  He was 47 years old. Joe Tex was an American rhythm and blues singer who was popular in the 1960s and 1970s. He is most famous for his hits “Hold On To What You’ve Got” (1965), “Skinny Legs and All” (1967), “I Gotcha” (1972), and “Ain’t Gonna Bump No More (With No Big Fat Woman)” (1977). He was nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame five times, most recently in 2016. Having recorded 19 studio albums and nearly 170 45,s he left his mark in the world of soul music and can claim a place in that special club i reserve for LEGENDS a true SOUL MAN!

Various Artists - The Complete Loma Singles Vol.1 (2017) 2 x CD - Real Gone Music - Rare Soul (FLAC 873MB)

It didn't have any hits to speak of. Its roster of artists was obscure to say the least. And it only released about 100 singles and a half dozen albums in the four short years (1964-1968) of its existence. But in the five & a half decades that have passed since Loma Records existed as a little known label of Warner Brothers Records, it has become a highly coveted label, maybe the most coveted label among '60s soul and R&B collectors. Why has Loma has become such a hot property? Well, it has not been well anthologized in the digital age, witness the fact that over half of the tracks on this 50 song 2 x CD set have never appeared on CD, and nothing piques collector interest like scarcity. But there is a deeper story here. While Loma was started by WB chief Mike Maitland as a purely commercial venture designed to accommodate the flood of recordings being made by artists and producers off roster, label head Bob Krasnow the veteran of such hallowed indie labels as Del-Fi, Autumn, and King recognized that Warner's holdings were severely lacking in soul and R&B, and brought a certain focus to Loma's "throw it at the wall and see if it sticks" approach. Which, given the times, was not a bad approach at all. The post Beatles rising tide of pop music really did lift all boats, prompting an incredible outburst of creativity in the recording industry across all genres. That's why, alongside the hitless wonders on these 50 tracks, you will find legends like Gene Page, Jerry Ragavoy, and James Brown producing and arranging. And why you will also find some legendary artists, like Ike & Tina Turner, Little Jerry Williams (a.k.a Swamp Dogg), and Smiley Lewis, as well as artists like The Olympics (whose complete output for Loma appears here, including the original version of "Good Lovin'") and The Apollas that are treasured by '60s soul collectors. many indemand rare northern dancers included.

The Four Tops - Keeper of The Castle (1972) LP Version ABC-Dunhill - Rare Soul (FLAC 286MB)

They formed in 1953, in Detroit as The Four Aims. They made their recording debut in 1955 backing Carolyn Hayes on her "Baby Say You Love Me / Really" single. The four founding members remained together for over four decades, until 1997 without a single change in personnel, incredible! In the 60's they were the main male vocal group for the song writing and production team of Holland-Dozier-Holland. After Holland-Dozier-Holland left Motown in 1967, the Four Tops were assigned to several producers, primarily Frank Wilson. When Motown left Detroit in 1972 to move to Los Angeles, California, the Tops stayed in Detroit and moved over to ABC Records, again they didnt trust berry gordy and thought his business practices were questionable. At ABC/Dunhill they continued to have charting singles into the late 1970s. The  Tops have recorded for, at various times, Motown, Casablanca, Prism, DBTV, Arista, & Sony. This was their debut album on ABC/Dunhill. With a total of 35 studio albums and 220 x 45,s plus countless compilations they have rightly gone down in history as one of the greatest soul groups of all time. Never ever having made a poor album, so how can you not love these guys ?...i do.. I can honestly say i play one of their albums every week no matter where i am, an addiction i cant live without!...LEGENDS!!!..They were Inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 1990 as Performers with honours. Various Artists – The Rogana Story - Hossman's Blues (2007) CD Digipak + Booklet - Rare Soul/blues (FLAC 315MB)

In the 1960’s, William "Hoss" Allen was one of the most powerful men in the rhythm and blues music industry. He was disc jockey at WLAC Radio in Nashville, the highest wattage clear channel R&B station in the country. He was also a music publisher, record label owner and record promotion man. In 1965 he started a new label, Hermitage Records and the ROGANA Production Company. ROGANA was designed to licence Allen’s productions to other labels. The idea being that he had access to more artists than Hermitage could handle. He held sessions at the recording studios of Starday/ King Records in Nashville on Dickerson Road. These sessions were held every weekend with Johnny Jones and the Imperial Seven, as the studio band. The band featured the cream of Nashville R&B musicians and in addition to Johnny on guitar there was Billy Cox on the bass, Freeman Brown on drums, Harrison Calloway and Aron Varnell on horns, Larry Lee on rhythm guitar and several keyboard players, including Skippy Brooks and Ray Valentine. Hoss also took some of his artists to Muscle Shoals, Alabama to record. Fame studio had a unique sound and the Rodge Martin sides in particular bare the indelible stamp of that legendary studio. In 1966, Hoss broadened his palette and became the host of the nationally syndicated television show The !!!! Beat. It was the first nationwide black music TV show and the house band was Johnny Jones and the Imperial Seven (now called The Beat Boys) with Frank Howard and the Commanders as vocalists and many of the artists appearing on the show had direct connections to Allen. In 1972 Allen retreated from the music business of recording but stayed on at WLAC Radio through the early 1990’s, hosting their gospel music programming. Hoss Allen passed away in 1997 but left a legacy of a life lived in the rhythm & blues firmament. The music remains richer for his participation. I did post a few episodes of "The Beat!!!!" on the old blog so i might dig them out for sunday reviews when the Detroit Interiew series is finalised. As ive always said a thin line between Blues & Soul if it ever existed. This is long deleted and a cracking album!

Various Artists - Impact Records Detroit The Complete Collection (2024) - Part One (MP3 174MB) Rare Soul/Pop

Harry Balk had been famous in Detroit for being the manager of Del Shannon and Little Willie John (Mable John's brother). He was also instrumental in the birth of the Garage Rock scene. His two record companies were responsible for some of the most lauded Northern Soul sides of all time, including Jock Mitchell's 'Not a chance in a million' on Impact 1023 and Dena Barnes 'If you ever walk out of my life' on Inferno 2002. Harry also worked extensively with Barney 'Duke' Browner who produced many legendary recordings. Interestingly, Duke's own classic 'Crying over you', on Impact 1008, was credited as a Harry Balk production. Again, Berry Gordy, bought the rights of these two fabulous labels and it was probably the highly successful 'Oh how happy' by the Shades of Blue' which got him thinking. Harry knew that his recordings were still revered on the Northern Soul Scene right up to his death in 2016. When asked in 2010 if he was still in touch with Duke Browner, he said he hadn't seen him for years. It had also been a long time since he had been down on Third, where the studio was located so he was unable to confirm that the old studio building was now a gas station, sadly it is. Iconic label for Soul/Northern fans, part 2 tomorrow followed on with the Inferno label. As with most of our collections this is the first time this label has been completed.
