The Stax / Volt Revue Live In London Vol 1 & Live In Paris Vol 2 - Atlantic (1991) flac

The powers that be at Stax/Volt upped the ante by taking its stable of artists overseas in the spring of 1967. VOLUME ONE -LIVE IN LONDON is a 10-pack of selections by the label's most notable names performing their biggest hits. Instrumental house band Booker T. & The MG'S and house horn section the Mar-Keys, (who open the show with "Green Onions" and "Philly Dog" respectively) provide tight accompaniment for their singing labelmates throughout the show. Among the highlighted performances are Otis Redding delivering a paint-peeling cover of Sam Cooke's "Shake," Carla Thomas playing to the natives with a soulful take on The Beatles' "Yesterday," and Eddie Floyd killing with a thumping rendition of his smash "Knock On Wood." Sam & Dave, (aka Double Dynamite), grab the lion's share of this performance, turning "I Take What I Want" into a sizzling shuffle, draping "When Something Is Wrong With My Baby" in maximum efforts, and bringing the house down with a raucous "Hold On, I'm Comin'." In the first half of 1967 the Beatles were in the studio recording a little album named Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. The story goes (I hope it's true) that the recording commitments meant they couldn't attend any of the concerts. So instead, they went out of their way to hire limousines to pick up the Stax tour artists from the airport. Most of those guys were suffering culture shock just flying to Europe. What they must have made of that gesture I can hardly imagine!! The tour Kicked off at The Astoria, In Finsbury Park, London. But also did a gig at Billy Walker's Upper Cut club in East London. I guess this that this was the only performance in a club environment....Anyone who was around at the time will remember Billy Walker as one of the iconic British boxers of the 1960's. A good looking guy they called him the Blond Bomber. He was on the fringes of the Swinging 60's/Mod scene along with other sports stars like Famous Footballers George Best and Bobby Moore. The tour took in the U.K./France and Scandinavia and brought most of those artists over here for the first time.Leeds,Liverpool and a few more uk venues were also used. Pretty much all the venues were on the theatre circuit. As a 16 year old this was one of the first gigs i attended and i thought i had died and gone to heaven👼🙋
