Denise Lasalle - I Get What I Want The Best Of The ABC/MCA Years (2001) Connoisseur Collection - Rare Soul (FLAC 485MB)

One of my many fave femme singers has always been the legendary  Denise LaSalle. She was born Ora Denise Allen in 1934, on a plantation in  Mississippi. At the age of 13, LaSalle was a principal singer with an all female gospel ensemble, the Sacred Five.In 1962, denise left Mississippi to join her oldest brother in Chicago. There she continued to sing with the Sacred Five and also signed a contract with Chess Records. When the company failed to produce a record for her for nearly five years, she left in 1967 and signed with Tarpon Records where she released “A Love Reputation.” (The song was a regional hit but went on to become a Northern Soul Floor filler/Anthem and still is today ,the record has the same backing track as " Just like The Weather" by Nolan chance also on a chicago label Constellation a year earlier in 1965.)  LaSalle, who had dropped out of high school earlier, completed her General Educational Development (GED) requirements the same year.In 1969, LaSalle married Bill Jones, another recording artist signed with the Crajon Records label. Two years later in 1971, her single, “Trapped by a Thing Called Love” was released by Westbound Records. It peaked at #13 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on the Billboard R&B chart with a million in sales and LaSalle received the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) gold disc. The following year, the single, “Now Run And Tell That,” peaked at #46. LaSalle divorced Jones in 1974.In 1976, LaSalle married James Wolfe, Jr., a disc jockey, and moved from Chicago to Jackson, Tennessee.  She also signed with ABC Records and in 1977 released “Love Me Right” which peaked at #10 on the R&B chart and reached #80 on the Pop Chart. In 1980, LaSalle signed with Malaco Records as a lyricist and composer. She wrote for Arzell “ZZ” Hill, a gospel and blues singer from Texas. After this successful project, LaSalle began recording with Malaco, eventually producing ten records including “Lady in the Street” (1983), “Right Place, Right Time” (1984), and “My Tu-Tu” (1985). In 1986, LaSalle founded the National Association for the Preservation of the Blues to lobby for the genre of soul and blues to remain connected to the artists and give them a larger excellent voice in the industry. “Hittin’ Where It Hurts,” released in 1989, rose to #61 on Top R&B Albums.  In 1998, LaSalle was nominated for the W. C. Handy Soul/Blues Female Artist of the Year. Also, in 2015, she was inducted into the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame. Denise LaSalle, the “Queen of the Blues,” died on January 8, 2018, in Nashville, Tennessee, of complications after a leg amputation. She was 83. She recorded 26 studio albums and nearly 70 x 45,s posessing a truly wonderful voice that many black artists from the deep south were gifted with. She also had many 45,s spun on the scene, but i,m sure you guessed that!

Denise LaSalle - Making A Good Thing Better - The Complete Westbound Singles 1970-1976 (2013) Westbound/Ace (FLAC 518MB) Rare Soul

Might as well review this collection also as its essential listening to this marvelous singer who was up there with Millie jackson & Shirley brown for telling it like it is!....The music that came out of Stax Records pretty much defined the Memphis Sound throughout the 1960s. As the 70s dawned, the sound came to be redefined by records produced by Willie Mitchell down the road from Stax at Royal Studios. In 1971, two singles emanated from Royal that exemplified Mitchell’s new Memphis Sound and took it to the masses. One was Al Green’s ‘Tired Of Being Alone’. The other was Denise LaSalle’s ‘Trapped By A Thing Called Love’. A groundbreaking record in its time, ‘Trapped By A Thing Called Love’ remains a defining example of what Southern Soul is all about. It took Denise to the very top of the Billboard R&B chart and made her an overnight success at the age of 30, after half a dozen previous 45s had failed to even nudge that chart. Even if Denise had never scored another hit, the record would have ensured her standing as a great of the genre. Fortunately, Denise did place many other fine 45s on the R&B and Pop charts over the next few years. Although she hailed from Chicago (via Mississippi) and released her music on a Detroit based label, Denise was a high profile standard bearer for female Southern Soul throughout her prime chart time. For over five years, Denise’s hits were recorded for Westbound Records and all of them feature here on “Making A Good Thing Better” – surprisingly, her first-ever greatest hits compilation. Denise released 12 Westbound singles, nine of which hit the R&B charts. In the wake of ‘Trapped By A Thing Called Love’, she hit the R&B Top 5 twice in succession with ‘Now Run And Tell That’ and ‘Man Sized Job’ and almost all of her other hit singles reached the Top 30, a measure of how popular she was at that time. Although most of her Westbound sides were cut in Memphis, she also recorded in Muscle Shoals and, towards the end of her tenure, in Detroit, the city that gave Denise her final hit for the label with the sublime ‘Married, But Not to Each Other’, a classic of the cheatin’ songs genre. Wherever she chose to record, the end product always came out as superior Southern Soul.Denise had long been overdue a singles compilation until Ace rectified that. All the tracks included here have been freshly mastered from the original Westbound production tapes. For those who want to hear Denise LaSalle at her best, singing hits that were all over the radio in the early 70s,

The Very Best Of John Ellison And The Soul Brothers Six (1995) Forevermore Music + 31 Bonus Tracks (MP3 411MB) Rare Soul

One of the greatest voices in Soul music is that of John Ellison frontman of The Soul brothers Six. You can recognise his unique voice as soon as you hear him. These guys have packed the floors of the Northern Scene for years only releasing 25 x 45,s and no albums apart from this compilation and another. This multi talented hard hitting soul group formed in Rochester, NY, consisting of the multi-talented Willie John Ellison, along with Lester Freeman, Vonell Benjamin, and Charles, Moses, Sam, and Harry Armstrong. (That's seven, but one of the Armstrong brothers' bounced early.) Joe Beard was also a founding member on bass and vocals, so that's eight! They debuted with "Stop Hurting Me" on Fine Records (1965) and another on Lyndell Records (1966) typo-credited to the Sold Brothers Six. A Philly DJ introduced them to Jerry Wexler of Atlantic Records, and they had a small hit with "Some Kinda Wonderful" (written by Ellison) in 1967, it was their most successful record, making it into the Top 100 at number 91. The Fantastic Johnny C took it four slots higher the following year & Grand Funk Railroad outdid 'em all by rocking it to number three spot in 1974. John Ellison, a coalminer's son, was born in 1941 & grew up in West Virginia not far from Bill Withers . He learned to play guitar and wrote his first songs when he was 13, later moving to New York City and then Rochester where he teamed up with The Soul Brothers Six cutting two records on two tiny labels before inking with Atlantic on the strength of Ellison's "Some Kinda Wonderful." But sales of follow-ups -- "You Better Check Yourself," "Your Love Is Such a Wonderful Love," "Thank You Baby for Loving Me," and "Drive" were poor and Atlantic dropped the group before the end of the decade. Around this time, Joe Johnson, James Johnson, Charles Pevy, and Eddie Reno replaced the Armstrong Brothers, who left disgusted and soured by the Atlantic ordeal. This new lineup waxed three singles on Phil La of Soul from 1972 to 1974, there are many unreleased tracks included here from that label that were shelved and i would say we have the entire output of this fabulous group with live tracks included. None of the released Phil L A tracks hit nationally but the band continued to work steadily throughout the country anyway. A substantial royalty check from Grand Funk Railroad's rendition of "Some Kinda Wonderful" revitalized Ellison's songwriting juices. He secured a deal with a small label in Rochester, and scored a Carolinas beach hit that did some business in Europe as well. John went onto record 4 solo albums the rest of the band seems to have faded away...Wonderful legendary Group!!!

Various Artists - Mike Hanks Detroit Labels & Works (2023) - Rare Soul (MP3 341MB)

Mike Hanks was a very gifted record label owner, producer, writer,& arranger. He was born on 30 August 1929, in Bessemer, Alabama & relocated to Detroit for work and to further his career in the music business. His main studio was located on the corner of John R. and East Grand (3040) Detroit. These were some of his studio regulars cutting a couple of sides. Hanks also owned MAH's (his initials) Wheelsville U.S.A., Premium Stuff, Soul (briefly, he sold it to Berry Gordy, who he intensely disliked later as Gordy was ruthless in business) and D-Town Records. He also helped start Westbound records. He was shot to death outside the 20 Grand Ballroom in 1970. But there is an indepth article on him over HERE that is well worth the read for all the characters he was involved with during his short and talented life. Mike and Ed Wingate (Wingate/Ric Tic labels) were two of the people who were responsible for that fast 4 x 4 Detroit sound that caught on with most of the other labels in the city. Berry Gordy simply crushed the opposition into selling out to him by various "dodgy" methods. Unknown to Mike at the time he was part of the backbone of the Detroit sound and the Northern Scene

Little Richard - Get Down With It - The OKeh Sessions (2004 + Booklet) Epic Legacy - Rare Soul (FLAC 580 MB)

Richard was such a talent he could do any genre of music. But on this canadian only released CD is my own personal Favourite  SOUL!. Here we have all his okeh recordings under one roof, all the rare stuff that collectors like myself had been hunting out for years on that beloved labels 45,s. The entire CD is consisted mainly of his Rare Dancers with just a few ballads included. His mega rare Northern version of "Hound Dog" which was unissued (apart from a few acetates doing the rounds in the northern clubs) is also here. While Little Richard Penniman is well known for his Specialty, Mercury, Veejay, and Modern recordings (though many of the sides on the latter two labels were merely redos of his Specialty hits), he is little celebrated for these wonderful sides recorded for Okeh in 1966 and 1967. The Little Richard on these sessions is a seasoned R&B singer whose feet are deeply rooted in modern-era Southern soul (or Northern to us here in the UK). Despite the fact that the material was all recorded in Hollywood. For Okeh, Little Richard recorded devastatingly fine versions of "Function at the Junction," "I Don't Want to Discuss It," Berry Gordy's "M-O-N-E-Y," "Poor Dog," "Hurry Sundown," and Sam Cooke's "Well All Right" to mention a few. To help him pull it all off  this was seen as a last ditch survival effort for the singer. Little Richard's sidemen for these dates include Johnny "Guitar" Watson, Larry Williams, Eddie Fletcher, and Glen Willings a crack studio band if there ever was one. In sum, the Okeh material yielded one fine, 11-track album in "The Explosive Little Richard" released in 1967, and three issued B-sides for its singles. Appearing on this CD for the very first time are three leftover tracks that include smoking raw versions of Fats Domino's "Rocking Chair" and Leiber & Stoller's "Hound Dog." For those who are contemplating a Little Richard CD, the Specialty sides should come first because they contain the original versions of his classics. For those who already have that material, this set is an excellent addition to the Penniman shelf. There isn't a loser in the bunch, and these performances are truly inspired, burning from start to finish, they are still startling even today. In addition to the great music, soul expert Charles White's liner notes are thorough and authoritative and offer the same kind of exuberance Penniman put into these performances. This is the richard i go for..Northern Soul Style!

Sunday Review Little Richard- King and Queen of Rock n Roll (2023)BBC - 1 Hour 29 minutes(3.2 GB)

Little Richard can stake a claim on having invented rock 'n' roll. A black artist who grew up in the segregated south of the United States, Richard Penniman broke down barriers and took 1950s America by storm. The Beatles and The Rolling Stones supported him and drew inspiration from his musicianship and stagecraft. He went on to influence artists as diverse as David Bowie, Elton John, Michael Jackson and Prince. Yet Little Richard spent years feeling his contribution to music had been overlooked in favour of white rock 'n' roll stars like Elvis Presley and Pat Boone. On top of that, the inner conflict between his religious beliefs and the music style he pioneered – as well as his battles with his own sexuality led him to quit rock 'n' roll not just once, but twice. Featuring interviewees including Ringo Starr, Keith Richards, Nile Rodgers and Big Freedia, alongside intimate contributions from friends, bandmates and the never-before-broadcast words of Little Richard himself, this is the story of a rollercoaster life, with musical highs and knuckle-biting lows, that makes the case for Richard being crowned king of rock 'n' roll...

The Lost Album - Little Richard - Southern Child (2020) Omnivore - Rare Soul/Funk/Country Blues (FLAC) 271 MB

To accompany the sunday review i thought i would also review this "other side" of the great artist, his Soul output has been well documented on this blog...The great lost Little Richard album, finally Issued as Richard Intended in 2020. Little Richard did something no one would have expected, he allowed his up till then, unrecognized country blues leaning to emerge. Further, unlike its predecessor, all 14 songs on Southern Child were written or co-written by Richard. While there is the funk, and soul one would expect from Richard during this period, Southern Child was a predominantly country blues affair. Recorded in the Spring of 1972 in Los Angeles, the album was recorded, mixed, mastered and handed into the label. It was given a catalog number and cover art was designed, but Reprise opted instead to release "The Second Coming" album in its place. Both albums were recorded with Bumps Blackwell in the producer,s chair, at around the same time, but the reasons Southern Child was left behind are lost to time. Perhaps the label felt Little Richard’s audience wouldn’t follow him into unfamiliar musical territory regardless of their artists’ desire to explore. The album’s 10 tracks are augmented by 4 bonus tracks on CD. One will never know why the label chose not to release the record after clearly prepping its release, but now, his tenure at Reprise can be fully documented with the release of Southern Child.

Various Artists - Thelma Record Co & Associates Detroit Complete Collection (2023) 3 x Volumes - Rare Soul (MP3) 415 MB

THELMA Records was a 1960s soul label from Detroit, Michigan, founded by Hazel Coleman, mother of Berry Gordy's first wife Thelma Coleman, some dispute it was named after her daughter. DACO record co was founded by Don Davis & Hazel Coleman as was GeGe records. APOLLO was a New York label with a DETROIT connection as was WILD DEUCE in the 45,s featured here. K.O. records was a soul label from Detroit, Michigan, owned by Armen Boladian who also owned Detroit labels Westbound,Eastbound,Nine records,& Sound Of Gospel records. this is to give you all the thread that connects these labels for inclusion here. So featured are another part of the jigsaw featuring some cream releases from the "D" as Detroit is known to it,s locals. I made a few friends on 3 record buying trips there and had some scary moments as a white british guy ploughing through record stores in mainly black area,s of that city. But the buzz i got from my visits never ever left me and like philadelphia i met some great people who looked out for me and gave me a few pointers to look for records. This is the largest collection yet featuring the labels highlighted above with 72 tracks in total to enjoy spread over 3 albums. Many not available anywhere else...Fact, without the Detroit influence in Soul music there would not have been a Northern Scene, and without the 200+ black music labels in the "D" in the 1960,s Motown would,nt have adopted that famous 4 x 4 beat that was their signature..So everything has a root.

Bunny Sigler - Let The Good Times Roll & (Feel So Good) (Stereo Version) (LP 1967 Parkway-Digital 2017 ABKCO) - Rare Soul (FLAC) 212MB

Philadelphia soul legend the late great Bunny sigler,s debut album, & what a way to introduce yourself to the music business with this dynamite of an album littered with Northern classics!...Bunny was born Walter Sigler in 1941 in Philly & sadly passed in 2017 in Philly. He recorded a total of 12 studio albums and 50+45,s. was given the nickname 'Bunny', suggested by his mother, who said he looked like an 'Easter Bunny'. He was also known as 'Mr Emotions' during his early career. Bunny's early aspirations were in basketball playing, prior to becoming a singer and songwriter. At times he varied his surname as a solo performing artist, performing under the names O’Sigler, Sligowitz, Bundino Siggalucci and De Siglio for tax purposes. Bunny first recorded for the Philadelphia based V-Tone Records label in 1959 as part of a doo-wop group called the Opals (who featured: Bunny Sigler, James Sigler(his brother), Ritchie Rome And Jack Faith. He also worked with several Philly Doo-Wop group's including the Cruisers. In the 70's, he set aside his recording career in order to concentrate on songwriting. Bunny penned songs for Jackie Moore, Joe Simon, the Three Degrees, O'Jays, The Intruders and Billy Paul, most of whom were Philadelphia International Records artists. For a short period, Bunny joined Phil Hurtt, Jackie Moore, LeBaron Taylor, and Tony Bell as a member of the group The Young Professionals, who released the single 'Let's Get It On' for the Atco imprint (a version of the Marvin Gaye evergreen). In 1973, Sigler returned to the charts on Philadelphia International Records with a remake of the old Bobby Lewis's hit 'Tossin' And Turnin' (number 38 R & B). Bunny worked with disco artists and groups like Double Exposure, First Choice, Linda Clifford and Force Of Nature (4). However he was primarily concerned with his group Instant Funk, who provided the instrumentation for many of his solo records. Bunny Sigler was originally signed to Philadelphia International Records, but signed to the Gold Mind Records subsidiary label of Salsoul Records in 1977, where his first album yielded the Tom Moulton mixed disco hit. He went on to record for Curtom,Gold mind, Salsoul, Legacy as well as his own Bunz Music label..A true legend and this album is still priceless a piece of soul gold!..My parkway album is worn to shit so i was very happy to obtain this digi copy. I did post this on the old blog in mp3 so now in glorious flac! A superb flawless album, every track is perfection (to me anyway!)

King Hannibal - Truth (1973) Aware - Rare Soul/Funk/Blues (MP3) 80MB

James Shaw (aka The Mighty Hannibal aka King Hannibal) was an American R&B, soul and funk singer, songwriter and record producer known for his showmanship and outlandish costumes. Several of his songs often carried deeper social or political themes. His biggest hit was “Hymn No. 5,” a commentary on the effects of the Vietnam War on servicemen, which was banned on radio. Shaw was born in 1939 and was raised in the Vine City neighborhood of Atlanta where he started singing doo-wop as a teenager, and in 1954 he joined his first group, The Overalls. In 1958 Shaw moved to Los Angeles where, under the name of Jimmy Shaw, he recorded several solo singles. At this point he also adopted the name ‘Hannibal’ and in 1962 he joined King Records, who released four further singles. Between 1962 and 1965 Hannibal also worked as a pimp in Los Angeles, a lifestyle that saw him dropped by King Records. In 1966 (and back in Atlanta) Hannibal adopted a more socially conscious stance and wrote “Hymn No. 5” which became his best known recording, reaching No. 21 on the Billboard R&B chart. The success the track brought however fueled a growing heroin addiction, and Hannibal spent eighteen months in prison for failing to pay a tax bill. Released from jail (and free of drugs), he restarted his recording career in the early 1970s when he issued a number of singles and this album Truth. Trying to find a new direction in the late 1970s, Hannibal was employed on the staff as a record producer at Venture Records, before working on the Atlanta Voice newspaper and even taking up acting roles. in 2001 Norton Records released Hannibalism, a compilation album of songs written between 1958 and 1973. The cult film, "Velvet Goldmine", also included fragments of his work and in 2009 he was the subject of a documentary film (Showtime!). Hannibal lost his eyesight in 2002 but still continued to perform live, and even enjoyed a seventieth birthday celebration on stage in 2009. The following year he contributed on Elton John and Leon Russell’s album "The Union". Hannibal passed away in 2014, at the age of 74. Hannibal’s larger-than-life performance aesthetic, combined with his willingness to address social issues in many of his songs, make him an important figure in the history of soul and funk, and a legacy worth examining. Regarded as a msterpiece nowadays this album is mad funky soul classics and intense dirty tracks backed by energetic musicians from the likes of Lee Moses, George McCurn (The Staple Singers) & Herman Hitson (Jimi Hendrix). At times the tunes on ‘Truth’ drift into a mellower southern type of soul and at other times the raw, fuzzy & gritty funky guitars make it a full on funk type of album more indebted to Funkadelic. Even on the slower tracks the psych-fuzz guitar from Lee Moses washes over everything, leaving a delightfully hazy gauze perched atop the simmering rhythms. The groove on ‘truth’ grabs you from the first note to the last....well it still does with me..from my backup archives!...It,s ashame he only ever recorded 2 albums.
