One of the best soul albums of all time...that you have probably never heard of!....Tremendous work from Anglo Saxon Brown who were a Philly group who started out their recording career as Ujima on Epic, where they issued a handful of well remembered singles to collectors and fans alike. then changed their name and cut this one and only full length set for Atlantic. It was produced & mostly written by the
Philadelphia team of Joseph Jefferson & Charles Simmons, who had
penned a number of classic ‘70s hits for the Spinners including "Games
People Play," "Mighty Love" and "Love Don’t Love Nobody") and recorded
at famed Sigma Sound studios in Philly with string arrangements by Jack
Faith, featuring the Don Renaldo Strings along with guitarist Bobby Eli.
An accomplished ten member band based in Richmond, Virginia...The album's a stunner all the way through, one of those sets that should have been much bigger at the time and which, like the Ujima singles, has only gotten the group more and more attention over the years as collectors and DJs have spread the word about its sublime soul sound! These guys are big as you'd guess from the image on the cover but they've got a tightness that's made even better by the Sigma Sound recording of the set which merges their smooth blend of male voices and a female singer with some classic 70s Philly sounds. The album excels on both mellow cuts and groovers, and is still sounds so fresh after all these years, a real under discovered gem! Debra Henry,s vocals are really outstanding...The overall style of the album is a nice smooth soulful feel and philly at its finest. Extra track on this expanded edition also... Highly recommended! The booklet is also a super read into their history etc....Please try and be patient with your requests as i really am ploughed under with them.

Great cover - great music! Thanks for review, P.
AMM, I don't need this lp, but I just wanted to say you wrote a great intro. Bobby Eli died last year. Brought a tear to my eye. Jewish kid from an all black neighborhood. Tougher than the two Tysons- Mike Tyson and Tyson Fury. Met him 4-5 times at record conventions. He wrote lots of Blue Magic's stuff, including my favorite "Just Don't Want to be Lonely." Also, Zoom, This Time Baby, Sideshow, Love wont let me wait. And a killer guitar player. He would talk to anyone, even me, for example. RIP, Bobby.
Thanks for the review AMM
