Untill i got a request for this gem i truly forgot how great this album is. Jackie Ross has a voice to melt ice cream, pure velvet, The second taster is one of my all time deep soul tracks..awesome!...Jaculyn Bless Ross was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1946. She sang as a child
on a gospel radio show hosted by her parents who were both preachers.
After her father died in 1954, the family moved to Chicago where she met
Sam Cooke who later signed her to his label, SAR Records. She released
her first single in 1962, "Hard Times," and sang in Syl Johnson's band
before signing with Chess in 1964. Jackie made her national debut in 1964 with "Selfish One" which reached
#11 on both the Billboard Hot 100 and R&B charts and made her name well known. This smash was
followed on both charts by "I've Got The Skill" (1964) and "Jerk And
Twine" (1965). Ross also had two minor hits with "Haste Makes Waste"
(1964) and the Trade Martin-penned "Take Me For A Little While" (1965).Ross is among a number of performing artists from around the mid
1960s who have, over the years, amassed a large following in England and
elsewhere among fans of Northern Soul music. But back to this incredible album that sadly i only have a back up of. This is very obscure later work from Jackie recorded in her years after Chess Records, with a sound that's a lot more mature than before! The style here is a bit like Marlena Shaw in the late 70s, a sophisticated blend of soul, jazz, and a little bit of club, served up with arrangements from Ben Wright and Jimmy Van Leer, the latter of whom produced the record. Jackie works surprisingly well in this setting with a style that makes us wonder what would have happened had she got a chance at larger exposure at the time, particularly through a label like Philly International, whose sound of the time is clearly an influence here.I,m very tempted to buy the CD after flogging the LP years ago (why did i do that ?) as i was blown away by the sheer qualty of her voice and music, so thx Big Dave for requesting it! If you`ve never heard this your in for a treat highly recommended!
