Mike Hanks was a very gifted record label owner,producer,writer,& arranger. He was born on 30 August 1929, in Bessemer, Alabama & relocated to Detroit for work and to further his career in the music business. His main studio was located on the corner of John R. and East Grand (3040) Detroit. These were some of his studio regulars cutting a couple of sides. Hanks also owned MAH's (his initials) Wheelsville U.S.A., Premium Stuff, Soul (briefly, he sold it to Berry Gordy, who he intensely disliked later as Gordy was ruthless in business) and D-Town Records. He also helped start Westbound records. He was shot to death outside the 20 Grand Ballroom in 1970. Mike and Ed Wingate (Wingate/Ric Tic labels) were two of the people who were responsible for that fast 4 x 4 Detroit sound that caught on with most of the other labels in the city. Berry Gordy simply crushed the opposition into selling out to him by various "dodgy" methods. Unknown to Mike at the time he was part of the backbone of the Detroit sound and the Northern Scene
