Kent 005 - The Impressions - The Impressions (1983) Vinyl (FLAC 165MB) - Rare Soul

I did say a while back i was going to plough through The Kent LP,s (001 to 004 already reviewed on here) of which the first 99 releases were on Vinyl as a few of you have requested. I posted all of them on the old blog but many of you were not on there. Most of the LP,s i sold to free up space (joke!) but backed up to mp3 (should have been flac but better than nothing) but the ones i still have (and can find ) i will rip to flac such as this gem.......This is one of the greatest soul groups to have ever existed in my book, i never tire of their albums and play at least one a week...no kiddin!! This was their first album for ABC-Paramount after they left Vee-Jay. In their various guises, the group scored 133 (yes, that's not a misprint!) US R&B chart singles and 85 on the Pop chart, phenominal for the day. Led by the charismatic singer, songwriter and guitarist Curtis Mayfield, the group also included Fred Cash and Sam Gooden (and, for the first album only, Arthur and Richard Brooks). In 1958 the group had backed Jerry Butler with such recordings as his mammoth hit "For Your Precious Love" (No 3 R&B, No 11 Pop). Curtis Mayfield continued to work with Butler as a musical arranger and guitarist but in 1961, The Impressions signed with ABC-Paramount and cut the sultry, Latin tinged Gypsy Woman. It achieved classic status reaching the charts at No 2 R&B and No 20 Pop. These songs were collected mainly from 1961 and 1962 including their next big hit It's All Right (No 1 R&B and No 4 Pop). It also defined the Chicago sound of soul, smooth, cleverly arranged vocals, light dramatic orchestrations and subtle but compelling rhythms. Now tied up with the other co-founder of the Chicago sound Johnny Pate, the sound The Impressions created influenced not only American and European pop balladeers (e.g.The Walker Brothers, among them) but it had a great influence on Jamaican music & Bob Marley in particular. Like most of the kent Lp,s this is long deleted and difficult & expensive to buy,but this did gain a CD release years later.

My all time favourite harmony group, though the Dells are pretty close, first heard them in a record store in Edinburgh when I was 16 years old, now 75 yo, and they are better than ever.

My favorite group. Glad to see them in person in San Antonio. No one is better than Mayfield. Thank you AMM.

Curtis Mayfield was one of the most prolific singers/musicians/writers ever. He wrote and performed over several decades, even after he was paralyzed in that freak accident. Great review!!!

Thanks AMM. The Impressions' music is timeless - sounds as great now as it did 60 years ago!
