Upgrade from the old blog...Like Donnie Elbert, the great chicago songstress Ruby Andrews only recorded six studio albums. I was going to review " Black Ruby" but then i remembered how i reviewed her Grapevine album on the old blog. So i opted for that as it collects all bar eight tracks from her days at Zodiac records on the above album and "Everybody Saw You". Hopefully i will review the lot in time(sic)..Ruby Stackhouse was born in Hollandale, Mississippi, She moved to Chicago around 1953, she scored her first hit in 1967 with "Casonova (Your Playing Days Are Over)" which rose to #9 on the US R&B charts. In 1972 she released the full length album “Black Ruby.” Cut in Memphis, Tennessee, Ruby’s second album for the Zodiac label produced the hit “You Made A Believer Out Of Me,” but another cut, "Just Lovin' You” has gone on to achieve cult status among the Northern Soul crowd, a hell of a great record from Ruby who started out singing sweet soul, but comes on hard and heavy on this righteous classic from the 70s! with tremendous vocals, and these arrangements that are right on the money packing a punch into nearly every tune! The Brothers Of Soul provide the great backings but Ruby's the clear star of the show, and works here in a style that blows us away every time we hear her sing. An Incredible album filled with emotive, drenching, dynamite, soul! how can you refuse it ?
