The Supremes - Meet The Supremes - (LP Released 1962)(Expanded Edition 2010 + Mini Booklet) Hip-O-Select (FLAC) Rare R&B/Soul

This was the Debut album from The Supremes released way back in 1962. In all this album has been released a mammoth 51 times! but this expanded version has all the unreleased tracks coverered on CD2. The LP version/back cover with "The Boy That Got Away"(ON CD2) on the track listing is the counterfeit copy, even back then the botlegging was rife! The authentic original album release cover, nor the vinyl has " "The Boy That Got Away" featured in any way....  The LP includes the group's earliest singles: "I Want a Guy", "Buttered Popcorn", "Let Me Go the Right Way", and "Your Heart Belongs to Me". The earliest recordings on this album, done between autumn of 1960 and autumn of 1961, feature the Supremes as a quartet composed of teenagers Diana Ross, Mary Wilson, Florence Ballard, and Barbara Martin. Martin is not pictured on the album because of her departure earlier in the year, although her vocals are present on the majority of the recordings on the album. Originally issued only in mono sound. A stereo remix of the album, with a new cover, was issued along with the original mono version in 1965. Additionally, a deluxe two compact disc edition was released by Hip-O Select in the spring of 2010 (FEATURED HERE), which included both the mono and stereo versions of the album, as well as several outtakes, non-album tracks and live performances. Though the album made little to no impact on the US album charts, in 1962, when it was released in the UK in 1964 it managed to peak at #13 on the UK Albums Chart, with some versions of the UK album having a slightly different track listing which featured some songs from their next album "Where Did Our Love Go". Many thanks to Moxy for booklet.

Dancin' Cat The Stafford DJ's - The Stafford Story Vol 1 - Dave Thorley - Rare Soul (MP3)

I,ve been inundated with requests to ask if there were any other series of the Cats, well yes there is, quite a few!... so your in for more treats! This is the start of a 33 Volume series with record labels added highlighting the DJ,s that made this such an iconic institution on the northern scene...The Stafford all-nighters held at The Top Of The World club in Newport Road and ran under the Top Dog Soul Club banner and it’s promoters were Dave Thorley and the late Keith Minshull. It opened its doors in May 1982 and closed its doors on the 22nd/23rd February 1986. To begin with it can be best described as a coming together of two legendary venues, the recently closed Wigan Casino and The Yate All-Nighters with a line consisting of and including the best DJ’s from both venues, Richard Searling, Dave Thorley, Ian Clark, Gary Rushbrooke, Ady Pountain and Dave Withers. Upstairs in the Bali Hi (or occasionally downstairs in Cinderella Rockerfellas) the featured Djs were usually Mick Smith, Nick Marshall, Pete Widdison, Budgie and Dave Alcock, with guest Djs often supplemented the regular line up. The venue was a “normal” night club before. Prior to the main room opening at 2am for the nighter crowd the downstairs (at street level) was used initially for our crowd and later the upstairs room which featured oldies but many a main room play started life in that room. The street level room was called Cinderella Rockerfella’s. Every other time it opened it was an up market Club or VIP Room adjacent to the TOTW with very strict entry rules. Over the time the all-nighter ran Dj’s came and went, Adam Buchanan, Robin Salter, Soul Sam, Chris Plant, Pat Brady and of course the 60’s Mafia Keb Darge and Guy Hennigan. Many others also featured over the years in both rooms. Many many new records were introduced to the scene and the crowd were eager to lap them up and new records were continually sought by all the Dj’s and many have since gone on to be classics still played up and down the country, many records from the era are still unknown to many who missed out when they left the scene after Wigan closed, later returning in the mid 90’s. The venue was also truly across the board featuring 60’s right up to new releases, probably the last venue where this was done on a regular basis in the same room. Now I nor anyone else lays claim that the records featured are all "Stafford" discoveries. Many found favour initially at earlier venues or were featured at other venues around the country at the time. One thing that is undoubtedly true, all featured at Stafford and many were made popular at Stafford. The music of the era is what I love the most, it is what has shaped by beliefs, ideals and attitude to the scene as a collector and later as a blog owner..

Wamono Groove - Kiyoshi Yamaya, Toshiko Yonekawa, Kifu Mitsuhashi - Wamono Groove Shakuhachi & Koto Jazz Funk '76 (2022) 180g - Vinyl - Japanese Fusion (FLAC)

Burned rare groove wildcards for dedicated diggers here.  The label in japan 180g released some incredible albums.  This set of Japanese funk evokes the fragrance of a Tokyo izakaya in the mid 1970s.
The term "wamono" is used to refer to vintage Japanese records that sizzle with lounge type charm - specifically disco, funk and jazz from the 1970s and '80s. This latest collection of wamono from the 180g label highlights the work of arranger Kiyoshi Yamaya, who works here with koto player (A Koto is a Japanese plucked half-tube zither instrument) Toshiko Yonekawa and shakuhachi player (is a Japanese end-blown bamboo flute) Kifu Mitsuhashi to formulate a groove that sits between traditional music and decadent Blaxploitation groove. These are the kind of sounds you'd expect to bubble up from the celluloid in a midnight movie double-bill, the themes are eerily familiar, but the instrumental selections give each riff a spark of fresh life. Needless to say, sections of these tracks feel as if they've been tailor-made for sampling or creative mixing. Good stuff.

Various Artists - Wamono A to Z Vol. I - Japanese Jazz Funk & Rare Groove 1968-1980 (2020) 180g - Vinyl - Rare Japanese Fusion (FLAC)

Active as a professional DJ in Japan since the late eighties, DJ Yoshizawa Dynamite is also a renowned remixer, compiler and producer. An avid record collector and an expert of the Wamono style, Yoshizawa published the Wamono A to Z records guide book in 2015 which instantly sold-out. The book unveiled a myriad of beautiful and rare records from a highly prolific, but still then unknown, Japanese groove scene. After many years working as a record buyer for several stores, DJ Chintam opened his own Blow Up shop in 2018 in Tokyo's Shibuya district. A member of the Dayjam Crew and a specialist of soul, funk, rare groove and disco music, Chintam is also an expert of the home-brewed Wamono grooves. He supervised and wrote the Wamono A to Z records guide book together with Yoshizawa. With this first volume of the Wamono series, our two DJs here guide you through some of the best and rarest jazz funk and rare groove tunes produced in Japan between 1968 and 1980. Put the needle on the record, turn up the volume and dig right now into the Wamono sound - the cream of the Japanese funk, soul, rare groove and disco music developed throughout the years since the end of the sixties in Japan!

Lyn Collins - Check Me Out If You Don't Know Me By Now (1991) Polydor P-Vine Japan CD Version - Rare Soul/Funk (FLAC)

Lyn recorded 3 studio albums & a live one plus 30 odd 45,s & a rare album as The Female Preacher to her credit....Following in the high heeled footsteps of Yvonne Fair, Sugar Pie DeSanto, Anna King, Vicki Anderson and Marva Whitney, throughout the first half of the seventies Lyn Collins - "Mama Feelgood, The Female Preacher"  was the principal female voice of the James Brown Revue. Lyn was born in Abilene, Texas in 1948. During her late teens she sang professionally locally but didn't get an outside break until, after seeing the James Brown show a time or three, she decided to home in on the Godfather, sending a demo to him c/o King Records. At first he didn't react but there must have been something memorable about the demo, for when Marva Whitney left his show in January 1970 he contacted Lyn and instructed, "Be ready". It still wasn't immediate acceptance because Vicki Anderson,Bobby Byrd,s wife, who had been with the revue in the mid sixties, rejoined the team for a further two years. During this period James first recorded five tracks on Lyn at Bobby Smith's Studio in Macon, Georgia, February 15th 1971. Two cuts from the session, Wheels Of Life and Just Won't Do Right, were twice scheduled for release on the King and People labels but only finally emerged on Polydor in December 1971, when it was clear that Vicki was packing up and shipping out again. (This is a recurring pattern with James, and an object lesson for all aspiring band/ revue leaders. Always have a replacement, whether a singer, an appropriate musician or an entire band on hold in the wings, ready to immediately step forward to fill a void.) When Vicki left again, Lyn Collins stepped into the spotlight to become Soul Sister No. 1.The most commercially successful of all of James Brown's funky femme fatales, Lyn's JB produced hits included Think (About It) and, in duet with James What My Baby Needs Now (both 1972); Mama Feelgood, How Long Can I Keep It Up, Take Me Just As I Am and We Want To Parrty, Parrty, Parrty, (1973). This album, her second, contains several of her other most popular recordings. A fine mix of funk and soul. If you don't know her by now, check it out. I have both the LP and this CD which has 8 Bonus tracks...Great version of the harold melvin & Teddy classic and she excels at some stunning ballads, not just the mama of Funk! ...So check her out, Superb stuff indeed!!!

Jasmine 3176 - Don Gardner & Dee Dee Ford - I Need Your Loving 1954-62 + Mini Booklet (2021) Rare R&B/Soul (MP3 LAME)

Don hailed from philadelphia and Dee Dee (real name Wrecia Holloway)from Louisiana. She had been living in Newark, New Jersey for several years and impressed Gardner with her versatility as both a keyboardist and gospel oriented singer. Using the stage name Dee Dee Ford, she electrified clubgoers whenever she launched into a never-less-than-super-soulful vocal. Now here is a cracking album from one of the best duo,s their ever was in the music business!   IMHO! I still have the superb Fire album LP. A huge 27 tracks by the legendary Don Gardner, 15 of which are with the equally legendary Dee Dee Ford. This is the first time that his early Philadelphia recordings have been coupled with the more famous New York recordings for the Fire Label. 'I Need Your Lovin'' was a mod anthem in the mid-1960s all over the UK and is one of that select collection '60s R&B tracks that is often considered to have been a chart hit when in fact it wasn't. The compilation features the whole of their Fire LP, which was a legendary collectors' item amongst serious mods throughout the nation. The earliest tracks on this compilation from 1954 feature the legendary organist, Jimmy Smith who got his first break in the business playing for Don's groups. Fully detailed in the Mini booklet. A duo well known to the soul crowd acoss the board & their NORTHERN dancers are here!..Fantastic collection!

Vicki Anderson - Wide Awake In A Dream - James brown Productions From Pre-Funk Years (2010) BGP + Booklet - Rare Soul (FLAC)

Vicki was born in Houston texas in 1939 as Myra Barnes. Early messages from a soul sister. Vicki Anderson’s pre-funk singles, many produced by Soul Brother #1, James Brown. On more than one occasion James Brown said that Vicki Anderson was the most talented of the several fine female vocalists he recruited into his revue over the years, which probably didn’t go down too well with Bea Ford, Yvonne Fair, Anna King, Marva Whitney, Lyn Collins or Martha High. Very positive about James Brown’s outstanding achievements and the benefit of his patronage, Vicki has never been quite so complimentary about the man himself. On joining Brown’s revue in 1965 she opted for the warmer companionship of his longtime musical foil Bobby Byrd, whom she went on to marry, a truly united relationship (which they later dubbed Byrd’s Nest) until Bobby’s death in 2007. She also recorded under her real name Myra Barnes for JB on King outta Nashville. Over the last 20 years Vicki has received accolades for the funky stuff she recorded in the 70s. She did indeed front some striking funk anthems, even if they were generally recorded outside her natural vocal comfort zone and she didn’t get to perform them on stage at the time. This 23 tracker, on the other hand, finds Vicki displaying her gospel roots with her 60s soul dress on. The earliest two tracks, recorded in her home state of Texas in 1964, were produced by Walter Whisenhunt and reputedly first released on his local Whiz label. (If you’ve ever seen a copy you must be a keen eyed hunter.) The 45 resurfaced on US Fontana after Vicki joined Brown’s revue. Two 1968 tracks were recorded by Bobby & Vicki in NYC for ABC during a breakaway from the revue. All other tracks, a couple of them previously unissued, were recorded under the James Brown Productions umbrella, although whether JB had much to do with some of them is debatable. Band members Bud Hobgood and Dave Matthews often fulfilled those duties while the boss was otherwise engaged. Although I’ve had most of these recordings on 45s for years re-listening to them again in one hit on CD has been something of a revelation. They’re not all wonderful. For instance, duetting on an inappropriate upbeat orchestration of ‘Let It Be Me’ both Vicki and JB lose the plot, which I’m sure was his fault, not hers. Overall, though, it’s a real banger of a CD. Particularly the slower, more romantic songs where Vicki is as soulful as you need to know and illustrates that if she’d been signed by, say, Atlantic Records, she might now be a household name.James Brown never got around to releasing an album by Vicki Anderson. Ace/BGP Records have finally done her proud IN 2010. This album has all of her rare NORTHERN dancers & pure SOUL records included, not a FUNK tune in sight, a couple but northern classics...Fantastic!!!

This special release contains 30 studio tracks, including a wide selection of those overlooked 45s and seminal works Mac Rebennack made as a composer, producer, arranger and performer for different local labels, between 1958 and 1962. Some of the songs were taped at sessions led by the likes of Big Boy Myles, The Ends, Sugar Boy Crawford, Chuck Carbo, and Ronnie Barron, among others. A number of these tracks feature fabulous session players from the Crescent City scene, such as saxophonists Lee Allen & Alvin “Red” Tyler, and drummer Earl Palmer. ***PASSING OF A LEGEND***Tina Turner - Simply The Best + Booklet (1991) Capitol (FLAC)

Like everyone else, when a true music/soul legend passes on its shock & disbelief. I dont get this feeling very often in life but when sam cooke, otis redding, marvin gaye,Bobby womack & whitney houston passed it was gut wrencing and felt like a family member/loved one had just gone.....So here,s my humble tribute to a wonderful lady who endured abuse from you know who came over to England to resurrect her career where she catapulted to super stardom. If anyone deserved that status it was her. If james brown was known as the hardest working man in show business then that title surely applied to tina as she was a force on her own, if anyone has attended any of her shows live or witnessed her performances on tv or cinema you,ll know where i,m coming from. To choose the appropiate albums to review was a tough one as i have everything her and ike recorded as well as her solo albums, i adored the woman and automatically bought anything by her on release. So today i,ve chosen 2 old albums that made a massive impact on my life and a compilation of her solo work + The best live album with ike. if anyone has requests please done hesitate to mail me. Kent 504 CDTOP - Various Artists - Psychedelic Soul - Produced By Norman Whitfield (2021) + Booklet (FLAC)

I finally got hold of the CD for £5! a bargain here in UK.  So i thought i would review an UPGRADE Here as it was also requested. I reviewed this back in 2021 Courtesy Of Trinity....This is the first ever compilation dedicated to the distinctive and influential productions of Norman Whitfield. You’ll find all time classics such as Marvin Gaye’s ‘I Heard It Through The Grapevine’, the Temptations’ ‘Papa Was A Rolling Stone’ and Rose Royce’s ‘Love Don’t Live Here Anymore’, alongside lesser known soul gems from the 70s. Compiled by Bob Stanley, who also put together the acclaimed, big-selling Thom Bell “Ready Or Not” set, it’s the perfect introduction to Whitfield’s work. Atmospheric, cinematic things like Rare Earth’s ‘Come With Me’ sit alongside floor-fillers such as David Ruffin’s wild ‘Me And Rock & Roll (Are Here To Stay)’.Whitfield started out at Motown and worked up to his instantly recognisable, dark, orchestrated sound. By the turn of the 70s he was the king of ‘psychedelic soul’, a genre that he basically invented, selling millions of records along the way. He was responsible for the Temptations’ second wave of hits, including party classic ‘Psychedelic Shack’. Whitfield concentrated on the Undisputed Truth, a group he put together and kept in his roster when he started his own Whitfield label in 1975. “Psychedelic Soul” is an illuminating cross-selection from Norman Whitfield’s exceptional career. I always enjoyed his distinctive sound as i,m sure most of you do also!
