As my scrawl says, the best CD,s kent have ever released and the rarest tracks on the planet as regards soul music. Most of these tracks get played on the scene (If the DJ,s concerned are lucky enough to have the 45,s.) I first encountered this rare iconic label outta Washington DC at a nighter in Nottingham where the roster of DJ,s there had 4 of these "gold bars" between them (8 jocks that night if i recall ?) The sheer rawness of the records attracted the masses gathered to the dancefloor which soon became packed everytime the blessed shrine 45,s were spun. I immediately fell in love with this labels output on the few 45,s i heard with their distinct Shrine sound of crashing crescendos of vibes, brass, backing vocals and cowbells and the lead singers wailing out the song that attracted you to the dance floor, irresistable! To quote Kent owner Ady Croasdell..... " Some intriguing articles in the "Shades of Soul" fanzine served to whet my appetite even further and when legendary Northern DJ and record producer Ian Levine told me that Eddie Singleton, the original label owner, was in town (London) and would be happy to lease his records, I was there. Eddie turned out to be friendly, charming, courteous and honourable and his involvement in, and knowledge of, the record industry is worthy of a book in its own right. In a nutshell, Horace's Records issued two Shrine LPs, several new tapes came to light, some of which were unissued, others eventually turning up on super rare 45s. DJ and collector Andy Rix managed to achieve the impossible in collecting every Shrine release, including one that was the only known copy of The Counts' Peaches Baby, which arrived in five separate pieces. Andy and Eddie's relationship developed to such an extent that Eddie saw Andy as the keeper of the Shrine flame and it is his research and perseverance that has made Kent's Shrine CD,s a) possible and b) so good. PS: The story includes Raynoma Gordy, the co-founder of Motown, Jackie Wilson, the Brill Building and singles worth £5000" So there you have all the info you require in both booklets included especially about the Detroit Connection. One by one these superb kent CD,S are being deleted ,these gems are still available but for how long ?..Pure Northern Soul in all its glory along with Sweet and Deep gems!
